SRW F350

I am looking for input on buying an F350, 6.7L,4x4,SRW to pull my newly purchased Montana 3610. I've done the math and the GCWR is not exceeded but is less than the 20% margin suggested. Anyone else out there using this configuration. Brand new to the 5th wheel world and rv'ing for that matter. Retirement is within sight ....
Thanks in advance for comments.

I am not familiar with your fifth wheel, I say you'll be happy with the truck. We've pulled our 3400RL just over 15,000 miles and are very satisfied with ours. Of course I'm assuming yours has the tow package. I also highly recommend the B&W Companion hitch. Best wishes oun your new adventure.

I was exactly where you are four years ago. We knew we were going to be buying our first Montana so I was deciding on what 1-ton to purchase. I crunched all the numbers based on my future purchase of a used 3400RL and the fact we would be full time immediately.

My decision led me to purchase a new 2012 F350 4x4, 6.7, SRW, Crew Cab. It had the heavy tow package and snow plow package which beefed thing up a little. What I did not anticipate was trading in our first Montana for a new slightly heavier Montana model a year after starting full time.

Between the slightly heavier model, plus hauling extra belongings being full time, I was right at all my limits.

Looking back on my original purchase I still would have bought a F350 with the same options, but it would have been a dually.

IMO as long as the g truck is within the specs for the Montana I would buy it. As for the 20% margin IMO it is bogus.

I am still using a 2000 Ford SRW SuperDuty 7.3 and it works quite well for our 3160 which is a couple of feet shorter than what you are looking at. The newer Super-duty's have more power better brakes and suspension. I would say it would be more than fine, I have not heard about this 20 percent deal. If that was the case than everyone would need to get 8,9 or 10 ton axels on their trailers. I will be buying a new truck when we get closer to retirement. The money is sitting in an account and it will probably be spent on a Ford SRW 1 ton. :-) Dualies are a nice option if your weight is way over what a SRW can handle. I just like the fact that SRW trucks are a bit easier to drive around and do better in the snow. If I ever did get a dually it would probably be a 450 or something that has the narrower frame that allows the trucks to turn sharper. Out at work our 450 and 550 trucks turn way sharper than our pickup trucks. They all turn sharper than my old SD with the front leaf springs.

I am pulling a 3582RL with a 2015 F350 SRW and it is fine. I am of course close to the max weight but being careful of what I put into it I am ok.

If towing a lot, I would go with the dually.

I have to add that our one ton dually is used for towing the Montana and that is about it. It is not a daily driver. It is rare that the Montana is not behind it. The dually is a pain in the butt to drive solo but we got the truck to pull the Montana and nothing else.

It looks like the concensus is the SRW is ok. I would go with the DRW but it will not fit in my garage (or any parking space). I test drove both the DRW and SRW and it may be my imagination but I think the SRW rides better. The Ford was definitely quieter than the Ram 3500.

All things considered, including my wife has found the SRW with the "perfect color", the F350 purchase is the way I'm going.

Thanks!! to everyone for responding, your input was just what I was looking for.

^what they said! My 2015 SRW F350 does great with my 3900FB. Yes I am also close tot eh limit, however we rarely carry a lot of stuff. The ride and handling are great on this truck. The new 2016s have some pretty cool features such as the new camera system and the back up assist.I use mine as a daily driver and the ride is pretty good.

We pulled our 2005 Montana with our SRW 3500 Duramax Diesel for 10 years with no problems. We now have a 2015 3440RL which has a slightly heavier pin weight and about 1500 pounds heavier and the SRW 3500 just eats it up. In fact with the enhance suspension on the trailer it seems to tow better than my 2005 did.

One other thing be sure you get a four wheel drive. On my last trip I used it two times and if I had not had it I would have been sol.

Pulling our 2014 3610 Monty with our 2012 F-350 4X4 SRW 6.7 diesel with no issues. Prior to the Monty, we were pulling a Voltage toy hauler with a Goldwing in it without issues. That package was heavier than the Monty. Truck is great. Towed across the country from S FL to San Diego, up to Washington, through Montana and back to S Fl. Truck didn't hiccup once. I think you'll be fine with the SRW.

The 20% rule as I have heard it most frequently applied, has been for Travel Trailers. So far we are enjoying our Montana very much! Acadia, White Mountains, NH, Charleston South Carolina, Natural Bridge Virginia, a Little Massachusetts, Connecticut, and southern Maine too..

20% is usually the base line for 5th wheel pin weight...20% of the GVWR if you don't know the actual weight. TTs normally have 10% for tongue weight...here are two examples:

Hi

Agree with richfaa

We have pulled our 2009 3663RE 85,000 miles at 23,300 lbs and that is within 200 lbs of GCW rating without problems.

I am now considering a SRW 3500 to pull our new SOB.
