DEF
I have a new F350 6.7L. It is new to me. Is all DEF created equal? I would like to get some backup in case I need it and Walmart seems to be the cheapest, but I don't want to get it if it is junk.

I get mine at Walmart. Some truck stops sell it from a pump for less $. But no more than I use I just buy a 2 1/2 gallon jug at WM every few months. Local auto parts stores sell the same a WM.

I've primarily used Blue Def in the 2.5g box. Bought it at Home Depot last time but have bough from several different sources. Whoever is closest seems to win.

WallyWorld is now selling their own brand and price is about equal to Bulk price at Truck Stops.

As long as the product meets ISO-22241-1, it is good to use. Just don't get crazy and buy a large amount of this stuff, as it has a shelf life, which is pretty long, but it can get old.

When possible, we get it from a truck stop at bulk price. Otherwise, Walmart.

I buy DEF at the closest location--auto parts store, service station, etc. when I travel. I have never carried any extra--too much weight and I have never found a need for it. It seems that if you will be buying diesel--DEF is available at some price. I treat it as part of requirements of a new diesel. Basically--no big deal--I usually burn about 1 gal/700 miles towing. Better not towing.

Look for a deal every time I buy but more important to me than the brand is to buy a smaller jug and buy it more often. I never buy a quantity to "store up" so to speak.

I've been using Blue Def. on my Ford I have to get a metal ring from the attendant to use the Def pumps , at least at Loves, it's a pain.
Anyway, I use to refill the tank when it was half empty but recently started waiting for the 800 mile warning in an attempt to keep the Def in the tank as fresh as possible

Agree with Scott, wait until I get the warning at 800-900 miles, then look for a Wal Mart (not hard to find), Tractor Supply, Orshelins and throw in 2.5 gallons. Stays fresh that way.

I don't go to WallMart unless I have to go. Autozone has great price and Tractor Store carries it at reasonable price.

We haven't found an auto parts store that sells it as cheap as Walmart. We used to use the Blue DEF, then Walmart started stocking another brand that was $3.00/jug cheaper. We see no difference in performance between the two. If your F350 is like ours, your 5 gallon DEF tank won't take 5 gallons until it is just about empty. We don't want to mess with getting that low, so when the warning light comes on, we add one jug and forget about it till next time.

Thanks for the info. I got a 2 1/2 gal jug from WalMart and will pack it as a backup for when I am in the middle of nowhere... I always seem to be there, it seems.

I buy Blue DEF at Walmart as its cheap. I put 2.5 gallons in my rig every 2500 miles. Since there is NO way to tell how much is in there, I err on the safe side and just try to keep it full.

What kind of truck do you have? It doesn't have a DEF gauge?

Jay-- I don't have a DEF gauge either. The only indication I have is on my dash where the computer says that the quantity is OK! The only indication I get is when it starts to run low and I have about 800 miles till it is empty. I have a GM product and they don't have the gauges, at least not in my 2012. The filler spout for the DEF tank is also under the hood which is a real pain in the -ss at times but I found out that the reason GM puts it under the hood is to keep it warmer and so it will not freeze in the winter cold weather. Funny however, because the 5 gallon tank is under the passenger side of the vehicles and exposed to the cold air more than the gas tank actually! Go figure!

My 2014 Ram 3500 DRW has an 8 gallon tank and also a gauge, but the gauge is non-linear. They talk about a DEF heater somewhere in the system. If the gauge gets to 1/2, it's suppose to take only a 2.5 box of DEF, but I find it can take 3.5-4 gallons. Once I let it go way below empty and got no warnings or cutbacks in performance. I gave up on testing and just keep it between 1/2 and full. If I'm pulling I use the truck stop DEF at the pump. Walmart brand DEF if just around town.
