Truck discharging
Our truck has been in the shop for over a week due to discharging when first started. Went to Advanced Auto first to have the batteries and alternator tested as the batteries were over 5 yrs old. Charging good batteries discharged so I bought two new batteries as we were driving to Rockford the next dat to pick up our new unit. After a couple of days it showed an initial discharge again and than charging ok after driving. Went to our local shop and after lots of testing they determined it was the input heater pulling mega amps when warming up. New heater on order and should have the truck back tomorrow.

Dodge should give you a new truck for this... Well, at least they should loan you a new one to entice you into buying a new one. John

Didn't go to Dodge. Stopped going to them the last time they tried to rape me. I job out now to independent shops. Less expensive and more thorough. This one took a little longer to repair but they checked out a lot.

It takes a few minutes for a diesel to charge batteries. My 06 Silverado and my 15 Silverado both did that.

Glad they found it. Some of those electrical things can be fun to find.

Mine last 2 have always done that, when the grid heater is running(cold weather start) it shows discharging then fine as the truck warms up. It's the normal operation for a Cummins

You're right Mike but my heater was drawing too many amps so they replaced it. Everything is in normal ranges.

Hi
If you install a digital voltage meter you will find that the truck starts charging as soon as you release the key from the start position. The OEM gages have a lag and are not a real time indication.
The Cummings diesel on the other hand uses and induction system heater instead of glow plugs. It is not uncommon for the Cummings to show a discharge for a period of time after the start until the engine warms up some. This is more apparent on cold days rather than summer days.
The problem the OP has is an induction system heater pulling more power than it was designed to.
