verizon 4G LTE
Today in the mail I received and upgrade from Verizon. 4G with a new plan. 4G at a $10 saving $50 / month compared to 3G for the same 5 gig. Or 10 gig for $80. I do have to buy the new modem for $50.
Any info good or bad?
thanks kevin

In our situation, we'll wait until:
1) An aircard with an external antenna adapter is available. We still travel where we're lucky to get National Access; and
2) Cradlepoint upgrades the firmware to support these two new modems from Verizon (expected 1st Qtr 2011).

Check the locations where 4G is avail. At present the coverage area is very limited. As time goes by coverage will be expanded. For me, it's avail in Rochester, but not out where I live, so I would guess coverage at CC will be limited unless it's located in a major city.

We intend to go to 4G, but verizon won't have full coverage until 2013 so we'll wait.

According to the ad the 4G usb modem is compatible with both 3G and 4G so you still have access..we have the mifi and that works a lot better than the usb aircard we had and so far it has worked everywhere we have traveled to while on the road..we just got the mifi last month so maybe we will wait a while...but sounds good in the future...but who really knows...

I upgraded from 3G to 4G verizon aircard, really works well and fast. But the problem with the pantech model that supports external antenna the cable is not available yet, so couldn't hookup my amp in trailer. So took it back now waiting for the new cable to come on market. The software that comes with aircard will display which mode, 3G or 4G, your in.

Steve,
Have you given up on your Hughes' setup? Is the 4G THAT much faster than the 3G? Not that I'm not happy with my current 3G stuff. Hope to see you soon.

Yes 4G is blazing fast, but coverage is still pretty limited to big cities. See you at the Q. Oh, remember I get the full hookup site this year.

Recieved our new Verizon Pantech UML290 usb modem today. We realize the 4G coverage is small right now but are saving $10/month on the new plan. We are amazed at the speed of this modem on 3G. It is 50-80& faster than our old UM175 modem

Charlie, do you think giving up the unlimited plan is worth the increase in speed? I am looking to go to the UML290 instead of our usb175 but are waiting for the wifi Ranger to get their upgrades done and going with that system instead of our Cradlepoint 350... Just not sure about giving up the unlimited.

Helen,
I guess it would depend on your usage, it would be hard to give up unlimited but I only had a 5GB plan so that made it much easier.

We are going that way. Called 3G store and they recommended the Verizon VL 600 air card for the 4G. The sent me the firmware and driver upgrade for my Cradlepoint 1000 router and that is done. we will lose our unlimited Gb but we do not go over. The 50.00 price will be 9.95 less than now and with 4G was can drop the DSl here at the stick house. We will wind up @ 46 dollars to the good.
We get a free upgrade on our usb 727 card /We will do the change over next week.

We have the Pantech 290 which we got from Verizon and the Cradle Point CTR 350 we got from the 3G Store. We also got the adapter cable and I am presently connected to the Wilson antenna. We also had the 5 gig plan and we never went over but if we do, the extra gigs would only cost $10 each. There were some software issues early in the release but the 3G store is very helpful. Cradle Point only offers 60 days of free support but if you buy from the 3G Store support is more or less unlimited.

Did the upgrade this Am with the 3G store. They recommended the LG VL 600 4G air card as the one with the highest performance and lowest problem. They sent the firmware and driver upgrade to our MBR 1000 router. Had to buy a compatible 4G external antenna, however since the 600 is fall back to 3G everything we have will work on 3G. Was eligible for the upgrade on my air card through Verizon but all they offered on the web site was a reconditioned one. 3G tech service said that was not an issue so the price to upgrade to the 600 was right FREE. We looked back on our date usage and 5GB is way more than we use so losing our unlimited data going to 4G is not a big deal. The new plan is 50.00 which is 9.95 less than the present 3G plan.
3G store handled everything . These folks are great and the tech support customer service is excellent. Total cost to me for the upgrade was 35.66 for ant and adaptor cables from 3G store..

Just activated the VL 600 Verizon 4G aircard 7.39 Mbps down 1.53Mbps up very impressive. That is with no external antenna and on the fringe of the Verizon tower. Lost the unlimited data plan but that is not a big deal for us.. the 4g plan is 9.95 less (50.00 for 5GB) than the 3G plan and we can do away with our DSl line as the 4G is faster.. Orlando .Fl is also a 4G market so we are in good shape. There is more 4G markets than we thought and the card is fall back to 3G when needed.
I stand corrected. After a bit of tweaking we see 11 and 12Mbpbs down from various test sites and it works fine through the MBR 1000 router after firm ware upgraded. That is much faster than 3G and good for us.
After a couple of weeks the average speed is 7 to 9Mbps down with a occasional burst to 11/12.

I don't know hardly anything about this topic, but Sue signed us up with Sprint, as we have Sprint phones. We had great service all across Kansas where we had no cell coverage at all. This thing looks like a Hockey-puck, it says 3-G and shows 21.3 MB here in Loveland Co. We have been watching tons of movies: Netflix, and it does great. I discussed with Michael about someone being on my connection, but Sue has the advanced protection hooked up he suggested. I guess the 2 users shown on the hockey puck are both my computer, one is the media center deal.
The guy told us that to get 4G you need to be in an area with a major sports team.
Kevin That is all I know about the subject, which is not much.
