Converter cooking battery

I have the WFCO converter on the Mountaineer. It is supposed to be a 3 stage converter, with a float charge mode to maintain the battery. It is a constant battle keeping water in the battery. I don't think this should be the case. Apparently, WFCO does not make a "smart charge" add on for their converter.

I have been pondering on the idea of putting high current diodes in the circuit to block the converter charge to the battery, and adding a battery minder or tender to keep the battery charged. We don't boondock, and stay on AC power unless there is a power outage. The only high current draw we have is when we pull the slides in or out, and that seldom happens. The 45 amp converter should be able to handle any other loads.

So, what do you guys think. Will it work OK?

Will,
I would get a converter that works unless you know you would never change your RV life style. It does sound like that one is cooking the battery. If I got one I would go with 55 or 65 amp too.
Good luck.

Thanks John. I heard back from WFCO with tips on troubleshooting the converter. As soon as this Artic blast is over, I will test it and see if it is going in float mode. I've never been impressed the the WFCO converter though. It has always overcharged the battery. I've often wished we had gone with the Montana line instead of the Mountaineer, due to lessor quality items in the Mountaineer. But, the floor plan is what DW wanted. No, I'm not saying she is the boss!
