2010 Silverado 6.6Duramaxx/Allison Trans Maint

How often(miles) do you change you Trans filter and fluid? I usually put about 20,000 miles a year (5000 miles towing). It has been 55,000 miles since I last changed the fluid/filter. Fluid smells great.

I have never changed my fluid. Probably this spring. I change my external filter every other oil change, about 6-7000 miles. 61,000 miles on the truck and I'm the original owner.

I'm pulling with an F-250. I've changed the fluid every 30,000 miles. So far no problems at 110,000. Transmissions are expensive, It's my opinion that changing the fluid is cheap insurance.

I have the Chevrolet dealer that sold me the truck do my maintenance and they don’t recommend changing the fluid. I did have it changed at 60,000 miles to have the new all synthetic fluid installed and that was 90,000 miles ago. I will have it sampled and sent to the lab next oil change.

It is recommended to change the spin on filter at 15,000 mile intervals on the Allison. The internal filter is not part of a maintenance schedule, nor is changing the fluid. I change the spin on every other LOF-about 18,000 miles.

Same here as to the filter, every other oil change. The fluid was changed at 30,000 mile recommended by my dealership since I mainly use vehicle for towing.

How about differential fluid...how often?

The key to transmission fluid and changing it is the type fluid it has. If it has Transynd, have it tested annually. As long as it comes back good, the fluid is good. This is from Tom Johnson, the fellow who developed Transynd...he's on another forum.

Have a 2001 duramax dually. Chg with Allison red filter every 25000 miles. Have always used transyd fluid and have it checked every 50000 miles. Trk has 175000 miles. Org owner. Only chg from stk allusion 1000 is a bigger pan more fluid $$$

I changed my 2001 every other year, regardless of mileage. Fluid and filter.

Chris I don't know about the Chevy. My Ford never needs to be changed you might check your owners manual. If it has synthetic oil it may never need to be changed.

I have an 07 classic durmax with the 6 sp Allison. I put amsoil in everything when it was brand new I change engine oil and rotate tires every 5k I change the spin on tranny filter every other oil change and replace fuel filter I flush tranny every 50k and service diffs and transfer case. I have also been in the auto repair bus my entire life so I believe in maintance

I also own an 07 GMC and change all filter a regular intervals. Hear's something I read and it turned out to be true. Gm and GMC trucks new from the factory are notorious for not enough differential fluid. I checked mine new and sure enough it was pretty low, same with a friends truck. granted this was in 07 but why not keep doing it to save money. Also read after a few thousand miles diff's should be emptied and refilled to get all the "stuff" cleaned out.

For anybody now itching to change their trans filter, remember to get the magnet off the old filter, clean it and put it on the new filter. also fill new filter with trans oil to replace most of what you lost.

A guy that works in my shop had an 05 Chevy with no oil in the rear end.

I am a believer in Amsoil, on my third Duramax (04, 08, 12, do I need a new one??). Ran about 200,000 on the first two, slowed down on the 12 with only 110k now. Have always changed the fluids at 50K with complete synthetics. Oil change every 10K.
I also have a couple of Toyota's and we do the same thing. Tundra is 10 years, gas engine, 250,000.We run them pretty hard, but they are trucks so we expect them to hold up with the proper maintenance.
Much, much cheaper to change the fluids than the trans, or rear end, etc.
Also, suggest you do the research, synthetics work and save money in the long run. Just expensive at the change.
