Frigidaire Microwave

Montana 3100RL 2014 - 10 months old

FYI - FYI
Drove all day and arrived in Bakersfiled Ca with reservations to stay at Bakersfield RV Resort. Set-up and plugged into 30 amp using Surge Guard Protector. It was our 48th Anniversary and we went to dinner at the in park restaurant...After dinner some TV and off to bed. 5:00am woke up and smelled smoke..Figured it was outside-got dressed and checked and no smoke outside.. I returned to interior and could tell smoke was stronger (nothing from the smoke alarm) Check everything in the living area went outside and unplugged the trailer and went back into the trailer. (still no alarm) Smoke was stronger but couldn't find the source. Wife and adult daughter were leaving the trailer and had door open and then I saw smoke boiling out of the Microwave vents at the top of the door. (nothing from alarm) The microwave was not operating, and had not been used in the las 24 hrs. Opened the Microwave door and a roll of paper towels was smoking and charred. (We put the roll in there to keep the glass plate from bouncing) With the air the roll burst into flames. I was able to grab the roll and throw it out the open door and unplug the oven. (still no alarm) Calm returned to the Montana but no more sleep.

Called Frididaire and they were concerned and had me take the microwave to Autherized Service center in our home town. (My wife and I had already decided that the Microwave wasn't returning to our 5th wheel. After a few days Service dept called saying that he could not find anything wrong with the oven and that it worked fine. He called the Frigidaire Service center reported his findings and also told them that the oven was charred inside. Frigidaire stepped up and is replacing the oven. Smoke alarm tested OK but doesn't smell smoke---I will be replacing it soon and we no longer carry paper towels in the Microwave oven.

I've never had this sort of problem with a microwave in over twenty years of RVing, but I've also never put a roll of paper towels in one to keep the platter from bouncing. That never entered my (small)head as being an issue to worry about.

What bothers me is why the microwave toasted that roll of paper towels. This makes no sense as it needs 115v AC power and to be activated in some way in order to do that. You state that there was you, your wife, and your adult daughter there. Maybe, just maybe, someone needs to fess up.

Here's your answer

Goshen-based Keystone RV is recalling 1,957 fifth-wheel travel trailers because their microwave ovens might self-start, posing a fire risk if contents are left inside the ovens, federal officials announced Thursday, April 17.

The voluntary recall follows a similar one issued March 27 by Nappanee-based Newmar Corp., which affected 657 vehicles made from February to mid-November of last year.
Both recalls involve defective microwaves made by Martinez, Ga.-based Frigidaire.
The Keystone recall affects its 2014 Alpine, Big Sky, Dutchmen Infinity, Dutchmen Voltage and Fuzion models, and 2013-14 Montana units. Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will repair the membrane/keypad component free of charge, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents.
Owners may call Keystone customer service at 866-425-4369 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

Thank You, Michelle and Ann

We have been racking our brains trying to think of what we might have done to start the fire. You've restored our confidence.

You are very welcome. Article was posted on one of the RV News sites and I remembered reading your post here, so thought you might like it.

Michelle & Ann are right on. Ours ran for 3 minutes randomly. We unplugged it & called the factory. They shipped a new one.

The dreaded "F" word. I volunteer at a non profit than sells used appliances. Over the past eight years, the brand that has given us the most problems and the one that breaks most often is Frigidaire. You could not give me one.

Recall is nice, but I want to see a list of serial numbers on the microwave that are affected by this issue. And does frigidaire really have a good handle on the root cause of the issue? Guess I need to go look at the Frigidaire website to see what is there. John

Fianlly found the recall info when we got a SamAlert from Good Sam. Models affected are CFMV152CLB and CFMV154CLS with Serial number range of KG30607951 thru KG31600670. Microwave may start on its own is the problem listed. At least my serial number is prior to this range by a bit. Sometimes you luck out. John

We had ours catch on fire this last winter. It had been turning on by itself several times and I called Frigidaire. They gave me authorized dealers to have them look at it but that night I woke up smelling smoke, the plastic cover for food was burning. long story short Keystone helped get it replaced. just checked the serial number on our new one and we are OK
