Dodged Tornado

Sunday started out like any regular one for us, looking forward to the Bears playing, then about 11am the tornado siren went off. Since our campground doesn't really have a good shelter we grabbed jackets and headed for our friends basement in Washington IL, which was only about 4 miles down the road. We were almost there and here came what they are now claiming was an F-3. I got my buddy on the phone and he was heading to the basement and it sure didn't look like we could make it to his place so we did a right angle to the monster and put the "pedal to the metal". It ended up crossing the highway about 1/2 mile behind us. We waited a few minutes and tried to get back into Washington to check on friends but the damage was too devastating and we couldn't get through. With utilities and cell towers down it took us another couple of hours but we were able to confirm no injuries or deaths to friends or family in and around Washington. The campground survived with little or no damage also. We are praying for the hundreds if not thousands of Washington citizens who have lost everything today.

So glad you made it through OK. We saw the news reports and it is really bad there. We are getting the storms coming through Nashville, TN area right now. Is your rig OK?

We will be adding our prayers to everyone there also!

I saw the devastation in Washington, Ill. on the news tonight. Glad you and yours are ok. Amazing how powerful, I heard F-4, 166 mph winds hit that town.

The search teams are continuing but it looks like only one death from the tornado. It was a friend of my buddy's, Steve Newbower, a construction worker. He had taken shelter in his basement and was sucked out and thrown up into a tree. They have confirmed it was an F-4 with winds 170 - 190 mph. There were actually 9 twisters in the surrounding Peoria area, this one being the largest which stayed on the ground for the longest. We have given our generator to some old neighbors in Washington who have three small children. I thought about lending a hand with construction skills but the National Guard have the town "locked down" with a curfew in place for now.

Nasty stuff, but in the aftermath it's great to hear of people helping each other out. When that curfew gets lifted, then I'm sure you'll be helping out. Bless you all and keep safe.

We know here in Tuscaloosa, AL what those tornadoes can do. They are devastating and takes many years To recover. Still many places here look like war zones. Our prayers go to everyone affected by this horrible destruction.

I was finally able to get into the worse hit area yesterday and help a friend. He and his wife had just made it to the basement when the tornado ripped the entire house up and slammed it back down. It was left with only one wall partially standing. We worked for about 5 hours digging out clothing, photos, and anything of value that could be found. There is a storm system moving in this afternoon so anything that isn't retrieved today will be ruined. What is amazing about the path of this F-4 through Washington was that it avoided two commercial areas and numerous large churches. It followed a path through the town that only concentrated on residential areas. 99% of these destroyed homes had basements. I can't imagine how many would have been killed if there were no basements in this area.

Not sure who you buddy is, but thanks for helping. I have a cousin in Washington that lost their entire house. They have talked about the wonderful help they have had from others.

It so good to know others help people in need.

I so believe in paying it forward. Hoping you never need to have a favor returned... then you are double blessed.

Working with hubby in natural disasters, makes you appreciate the little things when you see others lose all.
