Shower Window
I devised a way to keep out the heat from the bedroom.......YES!!!! We just went to Home Depot and bought a roll of Easy Gardener Sun Screen Fabric. It is for shade and privacy. But I knew that the black would block most of the sun. So we got some velcro squares and mesured all the vents including the one in the bathroom. We put it up and WOW what a difference it made in the heat in the bedroom. Just with the one up in the shower it made a remarkable difference. If we don't need them we just remove it, fold it up and put it under the bed. Takes no space at all. The roll is 6'x25" but it was worth the $30. that we paid for it. We plan to use the rest of it at home on the patio. Another use for the rest of it is to attach it to your awning side for privacy or shade. Either way we will find a use for it. Be sure to get the darker color because it blocks more sun & heat. Kathi

By the way, when I get home I plan on sewing the edges with my surger. It will finish all the edges that might unravel. Kathi

Kathi: I am assuming you are talking about the skylight in the shower. If so, we did something different. I picked up this idea from John and Marge (JLBOZ60)last yr. We put bubble wrap in between the two glassed areas in the skylight. The large bubble wrap. It lets the light in but keeps the heat out.

Wow, that is a good idea too. When you say the 2 glass areas what do you mean. We only have 1 that I can see. Kathi

We have the vent near the bed and the bubble over the shower. For the shower area we just bought one of those door covers from Camping World. It fits perfectly and keeps a lot of heat out of the bedroom area. We attached it with Velcro. I like the idea for the screen on the vent near the bed.

Kathi: There are two domes. An outer one and one that will come off with the inside trim. I put the bubble wrap between the two.

Funny you should mention the bubble wrap because that's EXACTLY what our former swimming pool solar cover was - blue bubble wrap. The "bubbles" radiate the sun's rays and actually heats up the pool about 10 degrees. I'd think the same would happen with the skylight ??

VanMan: It seems to work the opposite. The air bubbles keeps the heat out of the unit. It may be off-setting the outside air and the inside air. All I know is that the clear bubble wrap really works.

Bill, are you using the wrap with the big bubbles or the little bubbles? I'm not sure if it matters though.

Big bubbles. I am not sure if it matters either but that is what John and Marge (JLBOZ60) were using so I got the same in case it did make a diff. In case you are interested, I doubled the wrap to make it two levels thick for extra insulation value. Doesn't effect the light coming through.

VanMan: I have been thinking about what you were saying about heating the pool up. Actually I think what the solar cover does is hold the water heat in and not let it escape to the air.

I'm sure that holds the heat in, but the advertising hype was that the bubbles acted like little magnifying glasses to heat it up 10 - 12 degrees. I'm sure the bubbles also were necessary to keep her afloat !

Thanks, Bill. That's what I was looking for. We have the small bubble wrap on hand but I think we'll get the large bubbles to do this to our shower skylight too. Thanks for the tip about doubling it. That makes lots of sense.

I got our piece off some wrapping that came with something we purchased. Try Lowes, Home Depot or even some of the craft shops like Hobby Lobby, Walmart. I am sure it is available.

Harleyrider, I bought it the other day at a Walmart. It's in the office section with shipping boxes, etc. They had both the small and large bubble type. I had to look at both to figure out the one I got is the large bubbles. They're not all that big but bigger than the small ones. It was about 4 bucks for a good sized roll.

You kind folks continue to inspire as well as educate us. We tried the bubble-wrap-in-the-shower-skylite trick today and it works like a charm. It was an easy task, and it made the upper level of our unit noticibly cooler within minutes.
Thanks for the tip.

We used an automobile screen (the type that you put in the window when you park on a sunny day) that is silver-colored on both sides, cut it to fit the frame around the bubble over the shower and velcroed it to the frame. Now that we're in the Yukon where the sun doesn't set until 11:15 PM or later, we taped the edges with masking tape so the light won't come through. The sunscreen is bubblewrap-like material in the middle so it helps with the heat, too. We've also covered the bedroom vent with similar material.

Hey, Harmon & Ruth (neighbor!). I meant to look at your skylight this evening when you told us about it but plumb forgot. Remind me next time we're at your place, before you leave the area.
We sure have enjoyed our visits with you folks and are glad you are staying around a few more days.

Steve:
Sure thing. We will be right next door.
One thing I noticed is that the bubble wrap wrinkled a little bit overnight. If that bothers us, I might take it down and secure it around the perimeter with scotch tape or something. On the other hand, I might just accept it as another instance of "character."
