internet connection

Hi group,
We are new to RVing. We will get our Montana next week. Plan on being fulltimers. We want TV and Internet. Any suggestions? I've researched DirectTV and DirectWay for the internet but would like some first hand input. We will probably be staying 4-8 months at a time in each location, depending on my job. Any advice will be great appreciated.

There are a lot great threads here on internet access. For me I use wi-fi or a connectivity kit with my Alltel 270 Motorola cell phone.

For TV I use Direct TV. I mounted a crank up antenna and dish on the roof that I bought at CW. Next time I will get the more expensive auto tracking antenna with the dual outputs. I also have an external tripod but I don't take it with me any more.

Oh, I just take one of my home receivers with me when I travel.

Congratulations on your new coach. You might want to look at Maxwell Satellite.com and check them out. Happyrving....

Congratulations, Golfmanico! You got some good replies already so I'll just add what we've found.

Internet.

More and more parks are going to wi-fi. You'll need wi-fi in your pc or laptop to take advantage of this. If yours doesn't have it builtin you can add a card to handle it. I'm using a pcmcia card in my laptop for wi-fi connectivity as I write this. A few parks offer wi-fi for free. Others you subscribe to either with the park office or with the wi-fi company. I just inserted the card, fired up the system and the browser. Up came the browser screen for me to subscribe. Did so and instantly had wi-fi. Couldn't be easier (other than the paying part).

Some parks have phone lines at the campsite. These are of two kinds. One is where you call the phone company and have it turned on. There's hookup fees along with monthly fees, same as a stick home. This is usually not cost effective for less than a month.

The second kind is 'instant phone'. This is turned on, usualy for a fee, at the park office and you just connect your phone line and instantly have telephone. You need your own dialup isp for this.

Other parks have a phone line somewhere in the park you can use. Usually it's in their office, lobby, or laundry room but sometimes it's outside on the porch. Sometimes this is available 24x7, sometimes it's only during office hours. Some restrict the amount of time you can be on it, others don't.

Cell phone. We use a cable between cell phone and laptop when we have no other method to connect. In our case this makes the phone act as an external modem. Still need our dialup isp for this. There are no charges for using the phone this way but it does use our minutes so we limit this to nights and weekends when we have beaucoup minutes. Others have different cell phone capabilities but I don't know anything about those.

Satellite. Don't know anything about this, either. Someone else will likely help.

TV

Some parks have cable. This one we're in right now has Comcast cable with 70+ channels. This park does not charge extra for cable, it's built in to the rate I'm sure. Some parks charge extra if you use it. Some parks with cable have only a few channels. So ask in advance if this is important to you.

TV antenna is the other method we use. With the booster this is really not a bad choice in many cases other than the number of stations is limited. When in remote areas this isn't good, of course.

Satellite. Again, no experience here.
