Fifth Wheel Toilets
We recently got our first fifth wheel last week. After bringing it home I noticed how the toilets are different; where it seems to operate much like a standard toilet which will flush and it has a water storage tank on it as well!
I did notice that this seemed may be normal. I saw it in a pamphlet somewhere.
It looks to me like it would be a waste of space in the storage tank! Maybe I just need to be educated on how this is set up.
"How do you keep from filling the black water tank too soon?"
Thanks,
Bill & Donna

My black water tank is 38 gallon capacity. I think it uses less than 0.5 gallons per flush, so that means 76 flush plus what I add to the tank, so I'd guess I add 20%. Therefore it would be full in about 60 flushes. I think if I was in there by myself, that would take about me at least 12 days. (5 times per day divided into 60). If I'm at a full hookup campground, that means if I dump the black tank every 3 - 4 days, when I dump the gray tanks, I'll never have a problem.

Not sure I understand what you mean. We have an '05 Montana and while the toilet is a little different than on the '93 Dutchmen we used to have, it operates on the same principal. If yours flushes like a regular toilet, then perhaps it was changed by the previous owners. (I see you have an '01 model). If you have a regular toilet, then you may fill the black tank up sooner. Could you post a picture so we can see what you mean?

If you want to dump the black tank prior to it being 1/2 full use the flush line to add water before pulling the dump valve. If I've been in a site for just 3 or 4 days, there is no way I'm hauling around 4 days of crap, I always add water to the black tank before dumping and never had a problem.

I have to get pumped out at my summer site. I gt pumped out about every 2-3 weeks. Even then, I'm usually only about 3/4 full. It's only me, so I don't fill up as fast as a duo will. Also, I don't put the paper in unless...well, you get the idea...LOL I really like the holding tank stuff I use, it works well, and smells good too. Anyway, at $10.00 a pumpout, I do it only after 2-3 weeks, or if it's just a long streak of hot hot days. This doesn't happen very often here in the thumb of Michigan...LOL

Bill, It sounds like someone has changed out your toilet to a non RV type. You should not have a water storage tank. If you do your holding tank will fill up fast.

I would think that a residential style toilet would have the tendency to slop water out of the tank while you're traveling. That is, unless it has a pressure vessel inside the tank like one of toilets I installed in my house.

To try and clarify what I mean.....
The toilet that came with the Montana when we purchased it (used) does in fact operate just like a standard toilet. It has a built in storage tank with the flush arm. I think when flushing this toilet it would use several gallons of water or at least a couple gallons per flush.
When we purchased this unit I was looking at some pamphlets that was showing what looks like the same type of toilets that we have and I was wondering if this is something new that RV manufactures have started doing on some brands.
Thanks for all the responses!
Bill & Donna
I will say that it appears a P.O. at some point re decorated the bath room in the one we just bought and possibly they could have changed it out.
At any rate if this fills the black tank too quickly I will more than likely make a switch back to the standard RV toilet.
To respond to the question about the water sloshing around in the storage tank on the toilet, I have only pulled it home so far. What we did was to turn off the water punp and then flushed so that the water wouldn't slosh around. I will continue this practice until something is resolved.

We got the toilet issue resolved; I bought a regular RV toilet today and installed it. It appears that the regular flush toilets have never been a part of the original equipment. Evidently a PO had changed out the toilet for some reason or other. I just can't imagine how fast the holding tank would have filled up.

Glad you were able to get this resolved. I don't think the regular flush toilet would have been good for traveling.

Glad you got it resolved. It does sound as if someone installed a regular household type toilet in the RV. NO. It would not be good for hauling around the trailer. Now you should be all set with the regular type RV replacement. Good luck.
