New RAM or new Chevy

As the title suggests, I am looking at a new truck and am trying to decide between the new ram and new Chevy. Ford guys, dont bother trying to change my mind..will never happen...also dont want to turn this into a " this is better than that " post lol Anyways, I have always had RAM Cummins diesels, love them, love the one I have, but im looking for something new. I currently have a 3500, but the numbers on the new 2500 for both brands will pull my monty. Id since it is my daily driver, i like the softer suspension as well. Looking into the RAM, I currently have the HO engine with the HD Cummins. When I go to the 2500, I have to get the SO cummins and the standard tranny. They chevy will have the Duramax and the 10 speed Allison. The ram has the auto level air ride as an option, nothing like that on the chevy that I can see. Lastly, cummins is the best diesel out there, but Allison is the best tranny. So I am torn. Do I stick with what I know or do I change it up? The 2020 RAM wont be available to order until Feb 2020, Chevy's are available now, not that this matters, cause I can wait if I have to . So please, share your thoughts, I have never owned a Duramax before.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. All are equally reliable and capable. Just which ever fits your butt better and which one pleases your eye the most.

Don't have a 2020 yet but I can tell you my 3500 SRW Dmax rides way better than my 2500 Dmax's did. Less springs in the main pack, has helpers that pick up the weight, The difference in ride was/is night and day empty. The price difference is around 700 bucks...

Personally I chose the Ram and the auto air system. If I was going the other way, I'd get a GMC and take advantage of that new tailgate.

Just never lower the step section if you have a ball hitch in your receiver.

I've always been a GM owner. My dad was too which is probably why I still am. My uncle and dad when both alive would always go at each other because my uncle was a Ford guy which was pretty comical. Anyway I love my 2008 GMC 3500HD Duramax. It's primarily used as a construction vehicle towing utility and heavy dump trailers. I just upgraded to new wheels, tires, Bilstein shocks, Firestone wireless airbags and PowerStop rotors with ceramic pads. I would like to have one of the new ones that have better torque but I have to say mine does fine pulling our new 3120RL. I don't have exhaust brakes so that may be the next thing I upgrade because high RPM's going downhill with the transmission is not ideal but it works. Mine is a SRW but if I was doing this full time I would have a dually. However any of the new trucks will work fine with the torque and how they gear them. I have to agree with "BB TX" above that it's probably more about comfort, looks, preference, etc. to each individual than the make and model of truck. The new diesels have better torque and features that I don't have but with the upgrades I've done on mine I think I'll keep it for a few more years. These are heavy trailers so no matter what truck you get you need to feel in control especially going down hills.

I'm very impressed with my 2017 Chevy 3500 CC SRW Duramax. It rides much better than my 05 F250 did, and much quieter too. Of course all the new trucks are quieter. Like BB_TX said, you can't go wrong with any of them. Well, you can get a bad one from any of them I guess, but the odds are the same for all. I suggest you drive the 2500 and 3500 from each of them before you decide. I don't think you would regret getting a 3500 SRW, but that's for you to decide.

I’ve got real bad news for you. The 10 speed was developed by mostly by Ford with some help from GM and their money. It’s a heavy duty version of the transmission that’s in my F150 and almost the same as in the 755 Horse Camero. Don’t let that stop you it’s a fine gear box but an Allison in name only.
I would say go drive all three and decide which is the best truck for you.

You sir are completely wrong.
Ford had nothing to do with the new 10spd Allison.
Yes there is a light duty 10spd that GM and Ford co-developed.
The two transmission have nothing in common, not the case, not a shaft.

Thanks you are right. I read the 755 HP Camero had the same transmission as the new HD trucks. This after some research I found this was wrong. The new transmission was designed by GM with no input from Ford. It is indeed designed and built by GM.
I learned something, thanks.

I've owned all three brands over the years. One thing to consider is to stay away from the CP4 Bosch Pump which has been used on all three brands. Both the 2020 Ford and Chevy have done away with that style of injection pump. With that said, if your choice is between the Dodge and GM product, I've had much better luck with the GM's. I couldn't keep a front end or a transmission in a Dodge. The interior of the new Dodge are very nice. Haven't looked at a 2020 Chevy yet, other than the photo's posted, has to be the ugliest truck ever made with that front end and mirror combination. I switched to a Ford SD F250 from a Chevy K3500 and couldn't be happier.

Chevy

Our 2019 Chevy DRW is the best riding AND towing vehicle I have ever had. Like drog55chev my dad always drove General Motors products. The local GM dealer priced their DRW out of my budget. The local Ford dealer had ONE DRW on the lot at it was a platinum loaded with everything, really nice but it was way out of our price range. The Dodge dealer had 15 or more DRW but none of them swept DW off her feet...and i was unconvinced by the prices. That said - in Central TX I see far more Dodge DRW 3500s than anything else. Fords are next. That tells me that Dodge makes a good product and lots of folks buy them here.

I have driven all three at different times for work. For gas fired personal trucks I was fairly loyal to Ford but when it came time for a diesel I had to give sway to the tried and true Cummins in the Ram.

Having said that I will mention that Ram has a well earned reputation for front end issues. Mine has already had a few and the factory tires are very prone to add to that.

Overall though I would still go Ram if buying diesel (and we are looking at getting a 3/4 ton to pull our 24' enclosed toy trailer--wife will drive that and I will drive the 1 ton dually pulling the 5th wheel). Note to all you whimpy can't handle the dually guys---my wife drives ours all the time no problem at all. So there take that pffftttt.

But back on a serious note, I live in a park with about 100 full timers (DQ Dick is my next door neighbor). I'm not saying one brand is better than the other but with this experienced crowd it is about 50/50 Ford/Ram 100% 1 ton diesel duallies for larger 5th wheels. I could be wrong but I don't recall seeing a single Chevy towing anything over 35'. I don't think it is just this area either as folks come here from all over the country. Not saying the Chevy isn't a good truck, it just doesn't seem to be very popular in diesel dually at least around the big 5th wheel crowd. No idea why but there usually is a reason for one brand to be more popular.

I will say, I felt like Ram catered/marketed more to the 5th wheel crowd. If I am correct they are the only mfg. offering a direct from the factory 5th wheel hitch (CURT rebranded Mopar) with their trucks. And I think they were the ones that started the 4point "Puck" quick change system for the hitches. I am a BIG fan of the Puck system.

On a somewhat related note.
I heard that Ram has changed the dimensions of the 4 point Puck quick change hitch? Anyone hear similar?
We are looking at getting a new 3/4 ton and if we can't use the same hitch from our 2017 1 ton in the 2019 3/4 ton I am going to be miffed to put it mildly!!! Part of our thinking was that the 3/4 ton would be an emergency back up to the 1 ton (IE: if the one ton breaks down we can at least use the 3/4 ton to get the 5th wheel to a safe location (don't start on me about that I did say in an EMERGENCY not every day use).

Personally, this is one case where I would like to see a mandate that all mfgs. had to use the same measurements on their hitch mounts. Some things just need to be standardized.

Here at the national rally, nearly all the trucks in the 200 section are Chevy. Everyone will have their preferences, horror stories and honor roll stories, no matter what you purchase if it's made on Monday or Friday something will be wrong with it. Whichever one you feel most comfortable driving is the one for you.
