Santa Fe - Big Bend Nat'l Park - Austin, TX
Hello everyone.....
We are now in Santa Fe, NM for a few days....plan to head down through New Mexico to Texas. Plan to stop at Carlsbad Caverns, Big Bend Nat'l Park and then onto Austin for Thanksgiving with family.
Would appreciate recommendation for RV parks and state parks along the way. Also things we shouldn't miss seeing. Is there anything to see is Roswell?
Always appreciate MOC members input!
Thanks in advance.

Jo-Anna,
Try and stop over at the KOA in Van Horn Texas, try the Hamburgers at the KOA Kafe.
Have a safe journey.

Aliens, Alians, and more Alians, some from other planets, some from our own planet. Other than that, there really isn't much to see in Roswell.

Where are you folks staying in Santa Fe? Out of habit I always stay at the Santa Fe Skies, but not real impressed with it.

At Carlsbad, check and see if the bats are leaving the cave everynight this time of year? If so, its a do not miss event. It happens at dusk and well worth spending the extra time one evening to see it. If you are going through Roswell, the museum is worth the one hour or so stop, it was free when we were there in 2001. Have a great trip, and PM me after you do Big Bend, with infor on what not to miss, we plan end of January to be there and have input from a few others on one of the forum links.

Thanks everyone!!!!
Brad: We are at Santa Fe Sky RV park - not fancy but just off the highway and we aren't "home" much - out seeing the sights. When we are home the water, electric, etc. is fine.
You mean besides the alians in Roswell there isn't much there? LOL

David,
Where will you be staying in Austin? I can give you some suggestions for RV parks in this area. What part of Austin does your family live in?
Would love to meet you guys when you are here if you have the time.

Colleen,
David's brother lives in the hills on Fitzhugh Road - we think we will stay at McKinney Falls State Park if we can't get up their hill which has a sharp turn. We'll let you know when we arrive.

Jo-Anna,
Are you saying that his brother lives between Austin and Dripping Springs? There is a state park that is closer to Dripping Springs called Pedernales State Park that your Big Sky wouldn't have trouble in. There is also a RV park near Dripping Springs that is new and looks nice.
My son lives on Fitzhugh Road, and we are in Driftwood, which is 4 miles from Dripping Springs.

Try to stay in the Windmill RV park in Carlsbad. It is a decent place and they took Passport Am when we were there last year. Carlsbad RV Park & campground left a bad taste. Do you want cable-Oh that will be extra, are you going to use toilet paper in the restrooms-Oh that will be extra. A wider space will be extra too!
Get my meaning, they nickle and dime you to death.

For Big Bend, we stayed at a park in Terlingua, 3 miles outside the gate to Big Bend.
Rogue, if you want some ideas about Big Bend, check our our website. www.geocities.com/stevereigle . The applicable postcards --
Click on 2004 Postcards. Scroll down. The postcards you want range from February 25th to March 8th. We were there just a week but want to go back again one of these days.

I think that the october '07 issue of trailer life magazine had a special about the part of the world you're talking about. They published some sights and sounds of Roswell.

Steve, I have checked out the pictures that you and Vicki suggested. Have those areas written down as places we want to see. Probably will not stay at Terlingua, as we may be picking up a couple from San Antonio who will camp with us during that part of the trip. But your posts and pictures helped us descide where we want to go and see. Thanks.

Speaking of bats.... There's a huge colony under the Congress Street bridge, and they all come out to play at sunset. It's quite a spectacle, and shouldn't be missed. You should also plan a stop at Lukenbach, Texas, near Dripping Springs. Nothing there, but it's a famous place and you can tell your friends you've been there if it ever comes up in the conversation.
Also in the area is Enchanted Rock. A sacred place to the Comanche Indians, and the place where Jack Hays(Texas Ranger) held off a whole slew of 'em singlehanded, (with a little help from Col. Colt.) back in the day.
The Hill Country of Texas is a wonderful place. You'll enjoy it.

We were in the Fredericksburg/Luckenbach area last April and Good Sam published one of our experiences in that area.. It was in the Goodsamclub.com area and click on cyberspace for October.... We were there in April on our blog but they ran it in the Oct. issue..... Lots of other things on our April blog icluding five MOC couples that joined us there.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful information!!!! Keep it coming!
We arrived in Roswell today -- what an alien place to be -- wish we had been here in 1947 to see the space craft - visited the museum this afternoon -- as my grandson would say...."This place is coo coo bananas!" LOL
On to Carlsbad tomorrow, then Guadalupe ...... then heading down to Big Bend........
Stay tuned...

At Lukenbach there is quite often on the weekends an impromptu concert by diff folks that just wonder in and start making music, it is a great time. Down in Big Bend Park there are several dry camping spots and one full hookup park, which is nothing more than a parking lot with wtr, elec, sewer. This is down at Rio Grande Village store, and is a first come deal. Usually the best time to show up is a little before noon.

There also sometimes is someone pickin' at the back of the general store / post office. I didn't see it mentioned but just in case anyone doesn't already know, Luckenbach is where Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson hold (or at least used to hold) a concert every year. And, of course, is the subjec to the song by the same name, Luckenbach Texas.

Lukenbach was one of the places that Willie had his Fourth of July Picnics. I was there in my younger days, couldn't do it now.
We were told that the bats have left the bridge to go to a warmer climate. This information was given to us when we rode the Segways with Ozz and Sue.
Let me know if you need the phone number for Texas State Park reservations.
