Slide Makes Large Bang-Pop When Extended

Coming to experts. Our new 2015 HC 305RL has been at the dealership for some issues. We picked it up today and received conflicting reports from the service technician and service mananger.

The slide on the road side with recliners and dining table makes a very loud bang-pop sound when it reaches full extension. It's a cable slide. No hesitation sliding, no noise during extension, just at the end. The service technician does not believe it should make that noise, the service mananager said "All the new ones make that noise." No repair was done.

Any advice or recommendations much appreciated.

We're frustrated but have never had a cable slide before, so trying to do some research. It seems our RV was caught in a service quadmire. Our original "Service Advisor" went on vacation and returns on Monday. Once he left for vacation, no repairs or issues were addressed. We are taking it back in next week once our "Service Advisor" returns.

I hope your confidence in "your service advisor" has merit. Most service advisors whether at an RV dealership or car dealership is just a well dressed low paid "go between" the customer and dealership that writes up work requests. Few have any hands on experience with anything the dealership sells. You do have an issue as there should be no pop at the end of travel of any slide-out. It may be your wood fascia giving a bit due to the slide possibly being adjusted with a bit too far an extension.

The service manager sounds like he does not have a clue. We are on our second rig with cable slides and there is definitely no popping of any kind going on now or previously.

Thanks all for the quick responses. We're new to this dealership and service department and trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. But we also want our issues appropriately repaired or addressed, not just shooting from the hip to get us out of there.

The pop that you hear is probably when the cable to chain connections pass by each other and one of them is not perfectly vertical. Look behind the facia on both sides to make sure these are vertical and not slightly twisted. If it is twisted, give it a twist by hand. John

Have the service manager take you to another reig with cable slides and show you how they pop. Give him a chance and have him try several rigs. Then tell him to fix yours as none of the others pop. My bed room slid and it has never poped. I have watched many rigs being set up in difference parks and never heard one pop.

Interesting.... My '14 has the cable bedroom slide. Only the bed goes out. About every ??5-10 times the slide goes out, just as the slide is?? 90%+ extended there is a loud pop on the closet side of the slide.

I stop, double check, nothing in the way, continue with the extension and no noise.

I have no issues at all coming in. The cable popping as they pass each other, makes sense.

It sounds like the slide is actually catching on something on the closet side, once it pops once, no further issues.

Question, If I take the inspection plate/board off will I be able to see if the cables are hitting each other?

Jim

You have 8 cables 4 pull in each direction. The 4 pulling cables will be tight the other 4 should have some slack in them. Of all that I have checked the cables are too tight. You can go to the manufactures web site and see how they should be adjusted. Then check for your self.

Position Yourself to see top of slide inside the rv and have someone operate the slide switch. Ours, when the cable to chain connector goes over the electric motor, it will catch slightly on top of the motor. I think you will see the cause of your popping.

Just re-read both the installation and service manual. I did not see the mention the blocks on the chain ends needed to be in any certain position, however, it makes sense they need to be vertical so they do not hit each other when they pass.

Mine makes a single pop when it is ??90% extended. Looking at the cable blocks they are no where close to each other when the noise occurs, however the cables are tighter than the instructions seem to indicate they should be.

It only pops on deployment after traveling. If retracted and extended while parked it never makes a noise.

Since I have no leaks and it only does it every now and then, maybe leave well enough alone.

My 2015 305RL HC developed the same problem reported by "campntwins" and I am happy to report that my dealership found a solution to the issue. A technician noticed the facia was catching the motor when the slide was almost fully extended, thus causing the banging noise. To solve the issue, he ground the facia down (at about a 30 degree angle) so it would clear the motor.

Mine makes the loud pop too on the kitchen slide. It is the chain adjustment block hitting the rear of the motor. The motor is mounted very different than the other four slides. The dealer is going to remount it when we take it back next month. Stand on a chair and watch it while DW pushes the button. Quality Control was off that day at the factory.
