Washing with vinegar
Since the last time we lived in the Monte full-time I have begun using a cup of vinegar in our laundry. Since we are moving back into the rig I'm trying to figure out how to add the vinegar to the wash. Would it be okay to just pour it directly in the drum when I'm adding the clothes to wash or should I add it to the bleach dispenser? I'm not sure of the capacity of the dispensers... Thanks!

Are you using a splendide or some other model of washer?

Oh, I guess that would help! We have a Splendide 2100XC.

I would add it like bleach, NOT in the drum Tammy. How much?? Have no idea, start with small amount and go from there?? Just percentages, so, if you use 1/4 of the soap in your Splendide as compared to a full size washer, start with 1/4 of the vinegar you use.

Thanks, Carol. I'll give it a whirl and see what works. I was thinking the bleach dispenser was the way to go.

I use vinegar as a fabric softener and I put it in the fabric softener dispenser. I fill the softener section with it (on mine, a 7100XC, it has cross hair marks) and it works great! At home I have an HE machine and I like to line dry. With line drying clothes tend to become more stiff so I read somewhere that 'back in the day' they used vinegar as a fabric softener. I don't like Downy or other fragrance type softeners so I decided to try it. It works GREAT!
The added benefit to using it is that it keeps the sudsing down and also helps keep the pipes clean. Let us know what works best for you! Nice to see some other ladies on the forum!

I'm curious if the addition of vinegar to soften the wash gives it a somewhat sour smell?

Picture this: 12 dill pickles sitting around a campfire in various attire. One a frozen dill from Alaska, another half frozen from Canada who has also added some garlic, two from Louisana with a touch of hot Cajun sauce, who has the softest, best smelling wash.
Sorry folks could not resist, my Mom used vinegar back on the farm where water was terribly hard and I was a runny nosed kid.

I would also use the fabric softener dispenser. It shouldn't take much since these are small HE machines.

That was cute Ed! We got a laugh from that. For those of you asking about the sour smell you can't even tell that you added the vinegar at all. The added benefit is that it sets the dyes in your clothing so they don't fade as much.

OK, what kind of vinegar? White, etc? Any particular brand? I can't believe I'm actually thinking about trying this. If my wifes nursing uniforms come out smelling like vinegar, I'm a dead man.

I, too, often use white vinegar to replace fabric softener. That being said, I would put the vinegar in the fabric softener part of the dispenser. I use it most often when our washcloths tend to get that 'thick' feeling....if you know what I mean. It is an indicater to me that there is too much fabric softener, and the vinegar seems to clear that out. We have never had a 'vinegar or sour' smell to our laundry. As an aside, it's also good to clean out the washer every once in a while with vinegar. We have one of the new HE washer (I hate it....but that's for another post!!) and I have to do a vinegar clean of the washer (no laundry) every couple of months. Another reason why I hate the washer....see above note!! Happy Laundrying!!!

Okay Alwims, don't worry, we can walk you through this and if her uniforms smell like she just are fish and chips you can blame me! First off it is white vinegar, any brand will do. We buy ours at Costco. For the description I am sharing a link.

I use to use vinegar to wash my work clothes. It would take the nasty sweaty smokey smell out of them pretty well. Don't know about using for a softener.

Ed, that was funny!! I promise you won't smell the vinegar in the clothes! I promise!!! Thanks everyone for the tips! I emailed Splendide, who is well known for excellent customer service, and asked what the capacity is for the dispensers in the washer. The response was that he didn't know, but I could go fill it up but don't run it over. Okay! I'm going to try it in both the pre-wash dispenser and the fabric softener one and see which I like best. At home, I just put it in the washer (old fashioned top load) and let the clothes soak for about 1/2 hour before washing because I do like to use my liquid Downy.

We use a cup of white vinegar in the soap dispenser for any and all microfiber towels and wash clothes. Any fabric softener on microfiber decreases it absorbancy. Hot water and vinegar. When we use it we use it instead of soap..

So you can fit 1 cup of vinegar in the soap dispenser. Thank you!

I wash everything in cold water. Do I need to use hot water when using vinegar?

No you do not. I use it no matter what temperature. However, you will see it referenced a lot with hot water because a lot of times people are doing it with heavily soiled items to help with the smell or to help with the dirt.
