I towed with a 2005 2500 long bed 4:10 gears and a 6.0 gas and
it worked really hard going over the Cascade Mts to Bend Oregon. The
transmission also ran hot even with synthetic fluid. Gas mileage was about 8 to 9 towing and 15 on the highway. This is towing the smallest Montana made, the 2880RL. The pin weight was fine but over on the combined weight. Defintely go with the 350 or 3500 truck and diesel, the resale will probably be better and you won't be lacking for power.

Well I'm set on a 1-ton, probably going to be a dually. Is the V10 out of the question? Or is a diesel a must have?

The V10 will pull it, but you'll like the diesel better. No doubt in my mind. It's just a matter which you feel better fits the budget. Good choice to go ahead with the dually too. Wish I had done so.

If you are going to do any serious travel and serious towing, a diesel is the way to go. It is a very relaxing and enjoyable experience.

I have had my V10 for over a year and pulled the large 3400Rl over 12,000 miles. I am very happy with its pulling and handling. Lower maintence cost. Fuel mileage is bad though. 7 towing and 14 empty. I think I would buy gas again unless I was driving 25,000 miles a year.

Problem solved:

2001 Ford F350 SuperCab XLT
V10 Auto 3:73 rear gear
Power everything with A/C
Has the optional Camper package from the factory
I installed the later model front grille (modified to fit) and clear front corner lamps.
I also had the Line-X spray in liner and bars installed for my RBW 5th-wheel hitch, Magnaflow muffler with stainless tip and the Y-pipe mod/fix.

Truck is not perfect, but it is mechanically in great shape, which is what counts. And for the price, I couldn't beat it.

81k Miles
Drove it home for $9700.00

Set the 3380RL on the hitch at full weight and it never got close to touching the helper spring, LOL. I thing the truck dropped at the most 1.5 inches in the rear.

I also installed a SCT tuner from 5-Star Tuning with three custom tunes, 91 octane Eco-Perf, 91 octane Towing and 93 Octane Performance. Mike at 5-Star tuning was great, they seem to specialize in V10 tuning. I can tell the difference on the Econo-Perf, drives really well. Torque converter locks up in 3rd gear instead of overdrive which helps with the mpg. At the most, 1-2 mpg gain, but I'll take what I can get, LOL.

We pulled our 06 3400 with a stock 05 Ford V-10 F-350,CC,LB 4:30 diff.. 25K over most of the country. Did well execpt in the high mountains.
now have the same truck but 08 Diesel. The Diesel does better over all but the V-10 will serve you well.

Gas will not tow like a diesel. When towing, gas usage is horrible compared to diesel, too. Diesels, pound for pound have higher torque which gives them a towing edge over gasoline engines. I think a 1 ton with a gas engine is barely capable, so a 3/4 ton is worse.

If you want to stick to SRW look for a 1 ton. Year to year, stock Fords tend to have a higher GVWR compared to their counterpart stock competitors but it's all in the pillar label. Get a look at that, then find out the 5th wheel tow rating. Finally, the higher the differential ratio the better (for example 3.73 is not as good as 4.10). With a Monty, chances are a 1 ton is the way to go (Diesel increases the odds even more).

I used to be a gasoline guy all my life, but after owning a diesel I will NOT go back for my trucks.
