The L5P motors use a lot more than the LML's did. The LML's used def at about 1 gallon def 100 gallons of diesel.
1 gallon of DEF for 50 gallons of diesel. I hope not, but I do know it drinks it.

dont do it if you live in California...smog check every 2 years, unless you want to detune and reinstall all that crap every 2 years. Ugh California

Not a smart choice if you like to upgrade every 3-5 years!! Also if you live in an area that requires smog inspection for licensing purposes. Its not that I don't believe in the tuning and delete, its not financially feasible for a lot of us.

Understand. Here in Georgia we can and I keep my trucks a long time. It does help power fuel economy if you choose to do it.

Just curious, if you filled your DEF tank and it gets consumed normally, would it not be the case that the airspace in the DEF tank would be the same environment as the airspace in the can of remaining DEF. Both would create the moisture you are referring to. Sounds to me like the person telling you to toss unused DEF is just trying to create demand for the product by getting unwitting buyers to toss the remaining DEF that will not fit into the DEF tank. The argument for carrying extra DEF is reasonable but tossing out the remaining unused def when you fill up sounds wacky.

Or am I missing something?

My 2017 high country Silverado shows instant mileage, along with the various settings for mileage over different lengths. Cruising along at 60-65 without head or tail winds I get 19-23. With my 5th wheel about 10-12. I get about 5000 miles on full def tank before system starts talking to me. When it tells I'm below 30% I pick up 5 gallons at next fuel stop and wait until it gets down to about 25% and then put in all 5 gallons with nothing left over.

DEF delete

My diesel mechanic told me that if you delete - car dealers (at least new car dealers) won't take the truck in trade because they would have to put the DEF equipment back on before they could sell the vehicle legally. He also says he is getting fewer and fewer requests for deletes because DEF systems have improved since 2011-2012.

We had to sign documents stating that we have NOT altered the DEF/EGR system on our truck when we got rid of it, to a new car dealer. It stated we was responsible for any and all missing items of said system, and the cost to repair/replace them, if found we was untruthful. NOT worth the risk to me!

I will admit, IF I plan on keeping the truck I have for its entire life,I would NOT be opposed to doing a DEF/EGR delete and tuner upgrade on that particular truck!!!

DEF shelf life is 12 months if stored under 86 degrees. Up to 95 it is 6 months. so mainly just don't buy it and stick it somewhere hot for a few months. Most parts of the country don't stay over 85 for long, so I would think just don't buy it at a gas station that has it sitting out side in the heat.

Wow I guess I need to get ice packs for my truck!! When I and traveling i burn through the DEF, but I can go months without have to refill fuel tank much less the DEF Tank. And in Texas no such thing as a cool place outside in the summer.

Will check to make sure I get the freshest DEF

My 2013 F-350 hits the 500 miles of DEF left point after about 3,500 miles of towing 14,100 lbs in various conditions. I always carry two 2.5 gallon containers of DEF when towing. Solo driving is about 7,000 miles until DEF hits the 500 miles left point.

You need to check the manufacture/blend date before purchasing. I do this all the time. As stated earlier, the life of the fluid is normally 1 year. So when you purchase it, make sure it is as fresh as possible. Here is an example of what I mean. Today, I went to Walmart and purchased a 2.5 gallon box of Peak Blue Def. There is a code stamped somewhere on the box. My code was 122035133271. By breaking the code down, you can tell when this batch was produced. Here is how you can do that:


First 2 digits is the plant code. So mine was 12.


The next 2 digits tell me the year it expires. However, in order to tell when it was made you have to subtract 1. Since my code said 20 and I subtract 1 that gives me 19 for 2019.


The next 3 digits represent a Julian day which is better known as the day of the year it expires. However, you will need to subtract the stamped 3 digit code from 365 to determine the day it was made. Since my code said 351 and I subtract 351 from 365, that gives me 14. The 14th day of the year is Jan 14.


This simply means that the manufacture/blend date for the box I bought was Jan 14, 2019. As of this posting that was 9 days ago so I'd say that is pretty fresh.



The remaining numbers is a batch number and does not play a part in determining the fluid's age.

Had they had contamination of the fuel supply, there would have been multiple Semis broke down with 100 miles of that fuel stop with the same issue. It wouldn't been hard to trace it back to that supplier either!!! Vandalism sounds a little more plausible to me then contaminated fuel supply at a fuel stop.

Ive been running DEF in my semis since 2006,without issue in the last 10 years, and I get it right from a pump. I also get it from a pump for our tow vehicles we have had in the last 8 years too.

i am lucky as my truck does not need to burn money away in this.
but be very careful about the age of the def fluid you buy, as old or contaminated def will wreck your def $y$tem co$ting you thou$and$ of dollar$ in damage$.
learn how to read the labels on the containers, and only buy the fresh stuff. just like buying milk, only the freshest will do. never use old def. or from a opened container.


at my job we get a def delivery each week (sometimes twice a week) for this stuff. so we always have the freshest to pump into the rigs.
the trucks do not burn much, i do not know the cap of the def tanks, but in a good 500 miles less than a third (maybe less than a quarter) of a tank of def is used.
as a driver i do not fuel up the trucks, so that info is not at hand to me.


so buy fresh only as needed, like every couple weeks? pending on how many miles you drive, might say a gallon a month?? if low miles.
