Toilet Paper......Again?
Consumer Reports May issue had a section on toiler paper. One of their testing criteria was "Disintegration" (defined as time needed to break up in swirling water) which they did for septic system purposes.
All the brands they tested rated excellent for disintegration except Quilted Northern Ultra Plush (very good), Charmin Ultra Strong (fair), and Charmin Basic (good).
In addition, they were tested for wet strength, softness, and tearing ease.
Brands they tested in order of total ratings high to low;
Quilted Norhtern Ultra Plush
Charmin Ultra Strong
Cottonelle Ultra
Kirkland Signature (Cosco)
Quilted Northern Soft and Strong
White Cloud (Walmart)
Target Premium Ultra
Angel Soft
Walmart Bathroom Tissue
Scott Extra Soft
Cottonelle
Charmin Basic
Scott 1000
So it looks like we should not squeeze the Charmin. At least not in our campers.

Seems to me there was a thread on this subject about a year ago or so and the only thing that came out of it was that be be sure the package says it is septic tank safe! If it does not the septic tank CANNOT break down the TP enough and it flows into the radials and plugs them up-- thus the use of septic tank safe TP is recommended for the fivers and RV's overall since it will break up much easier in our blackwater tanks and not plug things up! As was said then--"Always use a lot of water in any case and the problem of plugging and dispensing will be solved or disolved" (not the exact words but close to it). It's nice to know now what we can use and not use at least so our behinds are comfey and we don't plug up the blackwater tank! Thanks for the post!! If you are still unsure of the breakdown quality (if you want to call it that) there's always the pint jar with a lid and a sheet of the TP and the old shake, shake, shake method of testing!

We did the shake test in Texas about 18 months ago, and at that time the only one that passed the test was Angel Soft. Since then, you know what CountryGuy makes me buy, eh???
More water, less paper!!
But, I might try to sneak number 1 and 3 into my grocery cart now!!

Been using the Scott 1000 ever since my septic tank tech recommended it. That was back in the early 90s when we had 2- 1,000 gallon septics for our house and 9 unit motel/fishing camp.
If it was good for those massive septics than it had to be good for my Monty and after nearly six years of fulltiming we have never had a problem.

Been using Cottonelle since we built our home (with septic) since 1996 and in our rigs since 2000. No problems with either to date and we will continue to use it the new Montana.

We used to use Quilted Northern until a later shake test showed it not disintegrating. An earlier test, by a couple of years, had it doing fine. We now use Angel Soft because the shake test disintegrated it so well that when I poured it down the sink it didn't even stick in the strainer. It went right on through. That's excellent disintegration. Plus, we like the soft paper. Sounds like there are a number of workable brands out there.
