Phoenix to Barstow CA - Info

Looking for information on route we can take from Phoenix to Barstow CA Monday morning. My Rand wants me to take I-17 up toward Flagstaff and then north on Rt. 69, to I-40, and west to Barstow. It would cut a ton of miles to run up US Rt. 93 from Phoenix to Kingman, then I-40 west to Barstow. Has anyone pulled their Montana up US Rt. 93 from Phoenix to I-40? There are no low bridges but for some reason it is not designated an actual truck route.

Haven't gone that way, but this website seems to indicate that the issues of the past have been corrected or are in the process: http://www.aaroads.com/guide.php?page=u0093naaz

We have gone this way many times with our Montana and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. The road has seen many improvements in the last several years. Much has been widened to 4 lane but the remaining 2 lane stretches a good

Thanks for information. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law thought it would be an okay route also. There is suppose to be a Shell station around Wickenburg that can handle big rigs that has diesel? I will probably have enough, plus I have three cans full but it never hurts to know where you can fuel up.

It's been a couple of years since we were in Wickenburg, but for some reason it seems to me we chose the Mobil station over the Shell station.

We've pulled it a couple of times. Zero issues. What Charli says on fuel. Jim

We've also taken 93 towards Kingman many times. Just have a couple of round-a-bouts in Wickenburg to negotiate. The run from Phoenix to Kingman is only about 200 miles, so fuel shouldn't be an issue if you start out full.

Thanks again for information. It sure takes the worry out of trying a route that you are unsure of when you can post it here and get quick accurate information.

Just one more thing, the fuel in Kingman is the cheapest in the area. DO NOT TRY TO Fuel in Needles CA. Diesel is as high as $5.00 a GL. Last best place to fuel going west on I-40 other than Kingman is at exit 9 in AZ. That is the turn off to Lake Havasu City Highway 95.

JandC,
Have a great trip. We've taken 93 a couple of times and would not hesitate to use it again. But our favorite route is to take 10 west to the Vicksburg cutoff. At the corner of Hwy 60 and the Vicksburg cutoff there is a nice little "Mom and Pops" type cafe -- KOFA. They have great parking for your rig. It makes a nice stop.

From the KOFA continue north on the Vicksburg cutoff. Then continue west on 72. This will take you directly into Parker, AZ. You can then take AZ 95 north thru Lake Havasu or continue west to Vidal Junction, CA.

Then take US95 north to Needles, CA. As already stated do NOT fuel up in Needles. If you must fuel up at this point simply drive across the river into AZ.

Now you are at Hwy I-40 which you simply head west until you reach Barstow. One of the nice things about this route is there is usually little traffic. The roads are all decent roads. Good two lane routes. Some places there are little or no shoulders but this is not a problem. Happy Travels, Hamrad

Thanks HamRad, I saw you post too late. Didn't read it until we were set up in Barstow.
