Boise to Oregon Coast

Hi folks - We're taking a run to Oregon coast from S.E. ID. and am leaning on catching US20 in Ontario, OR. We'll probably stay in Bend area - then on to Florence, Or. Any suggestions on C.G.s in Bend and best route to Florence from there.

Ed, There's a couple routes from Bend you can take. If you want to go south out of Bend you can take Hwy 97 to Hwy 58, then across to Springfield/Eugene and on to Florence. Another route is to go out of Bend on Hwy 20, through Sisters, and cross Santiam Pass, stay on 20 to the McKenzie Hwy (Rte 126) cutoff, which takes you to the Springfield/Eugene area and on to Florence. There's a couple RV parks in Bend - Crown Villa and Scandia - other MOC members who have stayed there could tell you what they are like. Here in La Pine (south of Bend on Hwy 97) there's a Coast to Coast park, Cascade Meadows, and some small RV parks, as well as a state park, if you take the route south.

Sunshine,
Thanks for the info - I think we will spend a couple days in the Bend area and solo thru the hwy20/126/242 scenic loops - then do the hwy97/58 route to Eugene area to Florence. Looks like a straighter shot pulling the Mountaineer.

Sunshine,
Just to report back - returned from the coast run last evening - took the Hwy 20 route to Eugene from Bend going over - raining all the way and interesting but beutiful windy road from Sisters on. Returned from Eugene via the 58/97 route and came thru LaPine early afternoon - too hot to stop, but will in the future. Thanks again for the info.

You might also try the hwy 20 route straight to Newport, that would save driving through Eugene-Springfield and down the coast, neat drive and spectular view of coast and sea lion caves and lot of campgrounds, or if you belong to the Elks they have a new campground just north of Florance which we feel is awesome,as well as others.

Ed, DON'T take the Monte on the 242 section. Lenght restriction I think around 30 ft on that road. 20 to 126 to Springfield/Eugene is no problem, came back that way from the Good Sam Rally in Redmond. Its well worth taking the TV on 242 for a nice drive.

Ed, Glad you enjoyed your drive. rogue is right, there is a length restriction on 242 out of Sisters, but it's well worth the scenic drive in the TV. We returned to La Pine yesterday afternoon from central California. La Pine was cool yesterday compared to the triple digit temps we had below Fresno. Safe travels.

Thanks for the input folks - we had talked about staying on 20 next time and shooting straight thru to Newport. We had planned on dropping a LaPine for a couple of days last week and soloing 242 loop after seeing the length restriction on the map - but we'll save that one for next time when it cools off. It was a real shock to come from 61 in Florence and hit 90's from top of the hill and thru LaPine onward. Once we connected 84 in Ontario and came on east - it just got hotter - 103degf by the time we hit Mountain Home. Good thing we were driving the diesel - heat no problem.
