Ram DEF System

Just a heads up to anyone that has a 2013 or newer Ram with DEF system. There is a software update that assists with DEF freeze ups. It is free if you have less than 100k miles. Otherwise, you will be looking at about $300. Ours froze up at minus 13 F in Rock Springs, Wyoming. We were on our way home from Quartzite and the Western Winter Blast. We needed to get home and we’re faced with snow or cold - both four letter words. I was also told it’s less likely to freeze up using the boxed DEF as opposed to the pumped DEF. Just a public service bulletin, but regardless if I planned on driving in below zero weather or not, if I had under 100k miles, I’d get the free software update.

why would boxed DEF be any different than pumped DEF?

According to the fleet guy, same as why diesel fuels get water in them. Condensation in the tanks. They now buy it in 55 gallon drums of Blue. I had never had an issue before, but never towed at -13 either.
