Extended Warranty - Montana Owners Club

I'll bet I get all kinds of opinions on this but here goes. I just signed the papers on my new 3665RE today and am picking it up tomorrow. The question of extended waranty came up, $2200.00 for 7 years. I am trading in an 05 Colorado which I had to take in several times the first year, slide problems (electric) inverter out etc. I usually don't buy these warranties but my last motor home had one and it saved me a couple grand on a new transmission 6 years after purchase. I figue one slide overhaul will be more than 2k. I would like to know if the Montanas are pretty much problem free or what. This is the 10th anniversery and is loaded with electronics. Help me decide please!!!!

I am not an extended warranty advocate except in the case of the RV. With heavy usage, we expose them to a wide array of stresses and hazards. Lots of things can go wrong and many of them are quite expensive. The longer we keep the rig, the more likely it is to need service. I would have to recommend the service policy (extended warranty). The last 2 or 3 years of the policy might be very important.

You may want to dicker with the dealer about that price. I would bet he has some wiggle room and if pressed, he may come down. Whine and tell him you will look elsewhere. See if he will come down under $2,000.

A few hours reading the forum and you'll soon figure out there is nothing "trouble free" about Montana! - or Colorado! - or your Motorhome. All RVs are handyman specials in my opinion, and if your not handy, the extended warranty is probably a good thing.

We didn't get one - we play the odds.

I really don't think you need any advice. Your experience shows you that there really should be some kind of "insurance" against devastating problems that can develop in RVs, not just Keystone models but industry-wide models. Go with your gut. Don't let anyone, either positive or naysayers sway you. You know what to do and you'll do right.

My wife talked me into our extended warranty in 06 for our Montana 3475RL. We love our Montana but with the use comes a few problems--so far I believe I am ahead on the warranty cost of about $2.4K for 7 years. So-next time, I am signing up again. In addition, if I sell before the warranty is up--it goes with the Monty--hope a future buyer sees that as a plus! By the way, with a trip to Alaska in 07, I would estimate we have about 20,000 miles on the Montana. We are not weekend users so if we go, we usually go on the road for about 6 weeks or up to 16 weeks several times a year--nice to be retired.

The only extended warranty program the DW & I have ever bought was for our current 3400. Our previous 03 model came with a 2 year manufactures warranty and cost us $1200. out of pocket during the 3rd and 4th years of ownership. During year two the main slide ram was replaced as well as the air conditioner under the second year of warranty. Now that the units only come with a one year warranty and considering our previous experiences, much similar to yours, an extended warranty seemed to be the way to go for our 2007 model.

thinking about ext. warranty. went to the dealer i use for warranty work and they use/like Xtraride (Protective). any comments or dealings with this company? i noticed no one has mentioned the company names, can we do that? LOL, if we can't forget i said the name. just trying to hear first hand the good or not so good points.

Thanks for the input, I'm dickering with them on price now. As far as retirement goes a friend of mine described it the best I've heard, "Six Saturdays and a Sunday, what's not to like."

We use "RV Shield" a exclusionary service contract ( extended warranty)We we paid 1014.00 for a 7 year contract in Nov 0f 06 on our 06 3400. To date they have paid out two claims for 950.00 of which 100.00 (2 50.00 deductibles) was out of my pocket. We also played the odds and we figured that the odds of going without a high dollar claim were not in our favor. Now all of our vendor warranties are up and we still have several years of "extended warranty' left with the odds remaining the same. Neighbors a few campers down in a Mobile Suites with a dometic fridg exactly like ours just had the cooling unit replaced, out of warranty, and with no extended warranty cost was 750.00,New unit was more than double that....

retirement... the best job you have ever had.

So far reading the claims in this thread, everbodies getting about a $0.60 to $0.90 return on their $1.00. Guess that's better than AIG stock

Not everybody. We have received $1.50 - $1.75 for every dollar of warranty money spent, not less and not more.

And we have got to 2013 to go on ours and we are @64.00 short of breaking even.What are the odds that the 3400 will not have another major failure till 2013??? OOpps we paid out 100 in deductibles so make that 164.00.

I like many others almost never buy extended warranties. On a RV if you are going to be more than the average rv'er who uses their RV for more than a 30 days a year absolutely buy it. I paid around $1500 for my extended warranty 5 years ago and my RV is in the shop now for slide repair ($1400), gas leak, gas valve and waste valve replacement($375). ALL RVS break and if your not handy with tools these things will put you in the poorhouse. When it gets done I'm installing a complete new step assembly because this wasn't covered. Another $200 for the steps plus my labor.

We'll I started this with the question. Since then (picked up our new 3665RE two weeks ago and it hasn't left my driveway. so far the rer camera doesn't work, the remote slide, jacks doesn't work, one dresser drawer is not bolted to the guides and the worst is I was putting the slides in and the snap ring on the rod end of teh bed slide cylonder wsn't put in right and blew out pumping all of my hydraulic oil ont eh carpet under the bed. So, it is obvious to me that Montanas are not put together as good as I hoped. I still think they are superior but I am leading towards the x warranty.

There is no way I would repair or clean up that mess under your bed, you want new carpet. Back to the dealer, no question in my mind.

The drawer would not upset me too much, but the rest of your list would.

Did you do a PDI AT the dealer??

There is absolutely no excuse for the condition of your RV. Keystone should be contacted and should assume responsibility for such shoddy workmanship.

We also went with Extra ride because of dealer recommendation.

I have a 2955 RL, one year old. Where would I get the best extended warranty. I am on the mass mail list from CW, Is their Ex War program worth while?
