Fireplace removal

I was attempting take my fireplace apart for a good cleaning and wire check, and I can't get the wood plugs out without marking up the spindles.Any suggestions from you guys who have done this.My plugs are pressed deep below the surface.I was thinking of finding new plugs and just splitting the originals ones and replacing them.

That is what we did. You can get the plugs at Home Depot or Lowes or Ace Hardware. The plugs that are in the sides of the chairs are the same size.
Happy trails..........................

I drilled a small hole in the plugs then screwed a small screw in that hole and pulled them out. Used new plugs bought at Lowes and a little stain to match the colors again.

Finished removing the fireplace, put a small hole in the middle of the wood plugs and pulled them out with a screw.Cleaned everything inside, checked all electrical connections and replaced a burned out bulb.A clean fireplace is a happy fireplace.
