Propane Water Heater
Hi Everyone.
New to the forum and we have a 2018 Montana High Country 362RD. It is great for our family and we love every bit of it so far. We recently had it up in Breckenridge, CO at Tiger Run for a few days of skiing and relaxing. We learned a lot about winter camping on this trip and things we would do differently. One thing that I had trouble with was getting the propane water heater to fire. The electric worked great, but I was wanting to try out all the systems on this trip at altitude. We live down in the plains, and sadly I never fired it up before this. Any thoughts on the propane water heater not igniting at altitude (9,600'). The furnace lite off no sweat so this is wear my question stems from. Trying to figure this out before I haul it over an hour and a half back to the dealer for service.

Can you even hear the igniter trying to light the water heater?

They didn't fire it up when it was located in the lower plains, the post states.

This is not unusual at high altitude. There are words on this in my manual for the water heater. It can be adjust to work at high altitude if you are going to camp high regularly. Would double check that it works normally at lower elevations. Its nice having the redundancy of electric and gas.

It might need an adjustment, mine has worked up to 11k. I think I remember reading something about Norcold not recommending the refrigerator be operated on propane at high altitudes. Their definition of high altitude is lower than my home elevation and all our summer campsites are much higher. So far, all my propane appliances have worked properly.

Yes we can hear the ignitor clicking out there and have visually seen it spark. I am charging the battery at home with it being winterized for a few more weeks before we leave on our next adventure. I'll give it a go at 6,000' and see what it does.

I only have a gas water heater and i never had any problem with it at altitude.

we've been up at 10k and never noticed a problem, we always use the propane, it seems to regenerate faster, with 2 daughters and wife, all long hair we need fast turn around times...lol

Ours was intermittent on a trip at 8600 feet - seemed like a low tank had some impact but no issue with furnace or reefer. Used the genny to fire up electric and still had hot water. Afterwards, had a tech show me how to adjust the air if it happens again.

Well we took the rig up to steamboat and she fired up no problem. I am wondering if there was an altitude limitation that prevented it from firing up when we were in Breckenridge. 6,700' vs 9,600' We are heading up to Leadville this summer so we will see there. We'll have the generator to run the electric heater just in case. With 4 people showering it is is nice to be able to re-heat the water faster on propane. Hope it works!
