We have a 2000i Canadian model. It lacks the connections for a Companion. It struggles to power a blow-dryer. I'm now researching how to upgrade to something that will handle the AC.

Dave,

You can get a Parallel Kit like we have; it was used before the Companion was manufactured.

Mike, I had a closer look at our Canadian version. It's basically the American version, but they have omitted the connections and circuitry for the parallel kit and put on a different applique faceplate (the part we see) with bilingual labels. I can send pictures (don't know how to conveniently display them here). I would need the internal pieces like connectors and sync circuitry to hook up the parallel kit.
Does anybody have experience with the bigger gennies that will run one AC comfortably? Handa and Yamaha come to mind, but how about other brands like Kipor, etc?
Mike, what is the actual current draw, starting and running, of the stock 15kBTU AC unit?

Dave,

Send me an email with the pictures. I have been inside the Parallel Kit - it isn't much but as breaker and a 30 amp socket. The circuitry should be built in to the Honda and you get wires with the kit to link them.

Our OEM AC pulls 7.9 amps starting and 7.4 amps continuous when the compressor is running. We did add a hard start capacitor to the AC, though.

Is anyone using the remote starts for the Hondas? That sounds like it would be nice...especially for morning coffee

If they had a remote start kit for our 2000's I would get one!

What capacitor did you get and where did you install it?

Dave,

Based on your picture to my email, your genny doesn't have the circuitry for parallel operation.

As for the Hard Start Capacitor, I purchased one like this. The HSC is wired into the AC from above, on the roof. It was very simple. Here is a link to some install directions.

With a lot of help from Mike and Kat, I have ordered the part they use. And had quite a learning curve about AC along the way!

Being in the research stage of my transforming to a fulltime fiver I am guessing that you folks do not recommend an Onan gen that most salesmen/women are selling at the dealerships? I hate to sound like a novice but that is what I am! I want to do it right the first time and it looks like I am on the best forum to make sure that happens! Thanks for all replies pro or con on this issue.

I think it comes down to personal choice. Some of us, like us, want the additional storage area in the front compartment and have built a tray on the rear of our 5er to hold our Honda generators. We don't need, nor want, to have a large Onan sucking up propane when not really needed. Of course, others have differing opinions which makes this forum great!

I researched the built-in genny before we ordered the Big Sky and most of the folks I talked to had the same opinion, it is a 400 pound, 5000 dollar extra that sucks propane like a Hoover. It is nice when boondocking or when the power goes out. However, we don't plan on doing a lot of boondocking or overnighting in Wally world parking lots. When we do decide to go boondocking we will either borrow or buy a EU2000 or 2 or a larger portable unit.

Dave, before they came out with the pre-wired pairing kits and Companion model EU2000 they had a conversion kit which consisted of a metal box with a 30amp plug and the required connections to pair them. It was more or less a hard wired system. But now that they have the pairing plugs on the new units there may be some of the old style conversions still around...

Dave, the Canadian version is gutted so you can't connect the parallel kit. My guess is that Honda didn't want to spend the big $$$ to satisfy CSA or CUL's requirements for the parallel option, so they just ditched the capability for Canadian sales.
