Kansas I-70

Traveling across Kansas this June. Anyone have anything good/bad to say about Mill Creek Campground (Paxico) and KOA in Wakeeney?

Also spending a couple of months in the Durango, Co area. Any favorites there?

We stayed at the KOA there, it was OK, a good overnight, they have long sites so you don't have to unhook.

If we have our RV lot finished by then you could overnite with us. We're building it in Wilsey, Ks so we can come back and help our daughter with the store (Council Grove, Ks) during the busy season. Wilsey is 40 miles south of I-70 off of US 56. Going to put in full hook ups that can be shared so we can have friends stop by as they travel through.

That's true, nice campground, couldn't be closer to the exit and good folks at the dealership if you need something.

Pineranch, I grew up in Wamego, not too far from Paxico. We've not stayed at Mill Creek but have driven through there a couple of times. Those we know who stayed there said the trains are frequent and loud. If I recall, the tracks are right along the property line.

The Four Seasons Park east of Abilene is nice, as someone else said. If you want to get as far as Topeka, we very highly recommend Deer Creek Valley RV Park on the east side of Topeka, just off I-70. We spent some time there this summer and will spend a month there next Summer and another month in the Fall. We have kids in the KC area. Make reservations as this place is often full.

I would NOT recommend... well, let me say I'd recommend you avoid Cottonwood RV Park at Bonner Springs (west side of KC) just off I-70. Maybe for a night. But be aware it's a pit in our opinion.

Also, the KOA on the south side of Topeka is not bad except there you get trains, planes, and automobiles. Lots of those. That used to be about the only choice in Topeka so we have spent a couple of months there over the years. It's ok but not my first choice.

We have stayed at the Wakeeney KOA a couple of nights, but only overnight. It worked well with our daily mileage plans. It's ok. Nothing special but was fine for our purposes and would be fine if we were visiting someone and needed to stay a bit longer.

Pinebranch, Not far from Wakenney is Oakley Ks. High Plains Campground is good for an overnighter or two. The campground is somewhat of a parking lot but the access is easy, hook-ups are easy, and the people that run it are the nicest you will ever meet. They also have a great restaurant right next to the campground. Last September it was $31 per night. Jim

Thanks all. I perhaps have over extended myself scheduling Paxico as my first stop from Southern Illinois. Thinking about the KOA east of KC then on to Hays.

We also like Clinton State Park on the west side of Lawrence, Ks. It's a nice park and has always had room, but it's electricity and water only with dump stations. We use it when we have meetings to attend in Lawrence or KC.

Mike, If you decide to stop just East of KC try Blue Springs Lake Campground. http://www.jacksongov.org/camping/ Nice park, further off the hiway then the KOA so much more quiet, and only $27 full hook ups. Jim

Mike, may I make a route recommendation, having towed through KC many, many times?

There is a tendency to avoid the downtown area and go alllllll the way around on I-435. We find the easiest route is straight through. There are two options as you approach downtown KC. As you approach downtown, I-70 turns to the north and goes around downtown and then back south. That route is fine but watch that 35 mph curve (and that is a serious speed limit!) just after the river.

Instead of taking I-70 around downtown to the north, though, we go straight through on I-670 through the downtown area. For that when you approach downtown from the east you'll need to be in one of the left two lanes. Then just follow the signs towards Topeka for the correct lane. I-670 then rejoins I-70 on the west side of town.

Either of those routes will work for you and both will save you 15 miles, per streets and trips, compared to going around on I-435.

I'd not recommend the downtown route during rush hour, though. In fact, I'd not recommend I-435 during rush hour, either, although it would be the lesser of evils at that time of day.
