Going West

Started our trip West yesterday from the Atlanta area.
Traveling with our middle child and her two kids, a boy and a girl, ages 13 and 12.

First stop is at Biloxi RV Resort for three days. Nice park with a pool by the bay and a lazy river. Some of our stops are San Antonio, The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Vegas, Zion National Park, Monument Valley. And Four Corners. Should be a great adventure.

Sounds like fun, as long as you avoid CA. $6 a gallon here.

Actually, diesel in much of CA is not quite that bad. I paid $5.04 in Santa Maria a week ago, and $5.09 in Sacramento yesterday. The EFS card will get you fuel for ~ $4.70. Way too high in any event.

On a different topic, I would pass on Four Corners. Been there, done that, and was disappointed like many others. Major tourist trap in the middle of nowhere. Google for pictures and that should satisfy your need to see it.

I started to reply to the OP with my thoughts, that matched yours, on four corners. Than I thought back on the time we took our girls there when they were about the age of the OP's grandkids. It was a high point for our girls realizing they could be in four states at the same time. It wasn't near as developed and commercialize then as it is now. Hell, take the kids despite the boring drive.

Got diesel yesterday at the TA south of Las Vegas on US 93 using the EFS card, $3.47 a gallon. $3.59 a gallon today at the Loves at Tonopah, NV.

Too bad you can't hang around Louisiana a bit longer. It looks like you'll be going right through Baton Rouge. There so much history in this state and literally, thousands of sites to see, and some really great State Parks, you'll need to come back through when you can stay away.

I'm currently staying 2 months volunteering at one of the Louisiana State Historic sites (a plantation) in exchange for a full hook-up campsite. It's a fantastic experience.

Anyway, your next trip, is just around the corner! Enjoy and happy travels.

(but hey!!!!! Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Dakotas is nothing to sneeze at either!) Kentucky has some really great State Park, as does Tennessee.

Lots and lots of places for new adventures. You'll be spending the rest of your life trying to see them all now! Especially with that new Montana!

What a great trip. Yes, 4 Corners is a bit of a disappointment but for us it was one of those things that it was nice to say we’ve been there…and now no need to go back.

Since you’ll be in the neighborhood it would be a shame to miss Bryce Canyon. It is breath-taking, with great hikes and easy access. Ruby’s RV Park is a very nice park very close to Bryce.

Drive safely and enjoy the journey. Great memories with the grand kids.

if you get a chance - go to where KY, TN and VA meet at Cumberland Gap. Not quite West but a great hike and good time to burn some energy.

You will have a great time we just did some of that we went to the montana western rally it was at camp verde rv resort very nice great pool for the family with a game room with lots of things in the area.

I would forgo the 4 corners as well unless you're a big Tony Hillerman fan. I would make the stop in Santa Fe and take in the museums, galleries and sandia peak. Lots to do there and lots of great history and art. Albuquerque and taos are also close by.

Please ignore this statement. You already have “major” tourist traps on your list of places you’re going.

Last year I finished my 7 year odyssey touring the lower 48 with the Montana. Middle of nowhere, out in the sticks, out of the way places are what makes memorable trips. I have way too many examples to list, but I will point out a couple.

Saw the 1948 Flxible bus/rv conversion that was used by the Gornike family in the movie RV. This was in some out of the way little museum in/near Amarillo.

Tracked down a bunch of cowboy boot “statues” all around Cheyenne.

Saw two archaeological digs. One was Native American, one was dinosaur. Both off the beaten path.

One of the coolest things about going to places like that, and tourist attractions, is seeing them on some tv show, movie or documentary and saying “I’ve been there”.

On a slightly different topic - I don't know how you pick your campsites. But I decide a city or location where I want to stop and then go online to 'campgrounds.rvlife.com'. They have options to specify if you want 50A, full hookups, etc and only show those. By the way, if you are going to be in AZ/Utah,NM into June it will be HOT. Definitely need 50A to run the A/C all day. I have 2 and they don't both run at the same time on 30A.
I love the west (and now I live here) and am very interested in scenic areas like where you are headed. Oh, you can stay in Williams west of Flagstaff at a nice CG and just walk to the train station and ride to the Canyon. I think they always are 'robbed' by highwaymen along the way too! LOL
