Another Brake Story
Some of you may remember reading about my debacle back in April - I took in the Monty for a gas leak and no electric hot water, and the dealer got his work orders switched... I got new brake shoes all around in that deal - didn't have to pay for the labor, and the shoes were fair price, even though I did not ask them to even check the brakes. (This was on the other work order...)
Well...
First part of July, we're headed back from a short trip, and the wife says she smells hot brakes... We pulled in to flush the tanks, and I noticed one wheel one particularly hot to the touch... So I backed off the brake controller some, hoping that might ease the problem.
One hour later, we're home, and now that wheel is too hot to keep your hand on... So the next weekend a buddy of mine and I dismatle the wheel to check the brakes, and when we took off the hub, burned and broken parts just came cascading out!! One shoe was badly burned, and the steel was even turned under.
Long story short - the dealer replaced it under warranty (AMEN) and while I was talking to the mechanic, he said they see about a half dozen of these EACH YEAR!!
I'm just glad it didn't lock up, catch fire, who knows what else!
So if you hear a scraping sound, your wheels are abnormally hot, or you smell brakes when you are driving on the level - CHECK IT OUT!

I wonder if they reversed the shoes during the install: leading & trailing shoe put on in the wrong position or were not adjusted properly at set-up. Should be re-adjusted after about 200 miles after a "rebuild" then at about 3k. Here is a very infomative link on electric brakes from Dexter:

Skyguy, did the dealer say why the problem occurred? Tweir's explanation sounds likely to me.
Thanks.

I had my brakes (Al Ko) replaced earlier this spring. The shop replaced everything except the drums. Within 50 miles, I also had one brake draging after a stop. I could smell the overheated brakes AND I could feel an extra drag when starting up from a stop. My IR thermometer listed the following temperatures shot at the hubs during some stop&go traffic:
135, 128, 132, 175!!
I checked the adjustment on that brake and it was exactly where it should be. I readjusted to be just slightly looser but that resulted in a locked up wheel. Nothing to do but to come to a full stop and backup a couple of feet to unlock the wheel. My only recourse was to snip the wire to that magnet. This was also during our July 4th trips. I had contacted the shop where I had the brake work done and they told me to bring it back in and they would take care of it but.... then I found my frame problem
During the remainder of the July 4th trips, I noticed that one other brake tends to not release either. I At least it eventually seems to release so I don't fry that wheel. can't figure out which one it is because I don't have a hot enough wheel hub to point it out. I wasn't happy about snipping out one magnet. I really REALLY didn't want to snip a second one. I NEED THOSE BRAKES!!!
Frame won the priority call for repair order. Waiting on parts for that now. THEN I can get the brakes taken care of!!

Sreigel - I asked, he shrugged. Said he didn't know - just that they see a half dozen of those a season - that's scary...

You should ask them how many brake problems they see after they work on the brakes? Probably all of them?
