head banger door

This is a heads up for the person from Keystone who monitors this forum.

There was a thread on the Montana Facebook group about the famous cabinet door which covers the control panel, and how people are always hitting their heads on it. You open the door to access the controls, and then maybe forget to close it, and then hit your head on it as you go up the stairs. I think most of us have done this.

People post their "fixes", which includes putting the door on a track so it slides sideways to open, hanging something on the door of the cabinet as a reminder, or making the door smaller so it covers the upper cabinet, leaving the control panel exposed. It is the latter fix that we applied.

Perhaps Keystone should make a design change here. This is such a common problem, and has been going on for several years. Check to see what other manufacturers do about this issue. Maybe install a rolling door, like the old roll top desks is the answer. Perhaps relocating the control panel is an option. There must be a better way!

They will fix it when they can find a way to do it more cheaply.

I installed a screen door spring (9 in from Lowe’s ) and some cup hooks that pulls the door shut Installed at the top out of the way. Have not bumped head since

Did the same as footz1941, except I used a small bungee cord and mounted at the bottom using the existing latch as one of the anchor points.

I am splitting the door in half basically the upper door will be just for the upper cabinet and will be hinged on the right side. The lower door will be hinged at the top so it will shut when you release it Waiting on new doors from Menards now.

It wouldn't take to many head bangs for me to remove that door all together LOL.

Why not just get in the habit of closing the door?

Lynwood is right, that's what we do, haven't hit our heads yet, if it wasn't for this forum, I would have never guessed this was an issue

Why couldn't the hinges be put across the top, instead of the side. Then it will always close! For those that think they need the door to stay open for a period of time, a sliding pin bar like used to be on upswing doors.

You must be kidding They have zero interest in doing anything unless they save money ... while our dealer fixed issues they could, you just can't fix stupid..
For instance, our electrical breaker panel is virtually on the floor . It might be more convenient if it were mounted at eye level so you don't have to lay flat on the floor to see the breakers
Our refrigerator door won't open all the way to remove the shelves on the left side of the unit, so you have to disassemble the drawer structure to get the drawer out
the outlets for our slide in the rear, plus microwave, plus outlet on kitchen counter and the bathroom are all on the same circuit. Let's see... coffee maker kicks on, using microwave, and wife is blow drying her hair Yep.. can't fix stupid
These are structural issues that they don't care to fix so people have a better experience

Bloody Nose

Yup, things get busy, the control center door is left open, you are looking down at the steps to climb them, reach the top step and "Bang" - nearly a broken nose and very bloody.

Lol. Let’s see, gear boxes been leaking on slide roofs since 2017 and they had drip pans made to catch the oil. I’m thinking the fix for this dang head busting door is either going to be Keystone will send you a pool noodle to put on the edges of the door, or if you complain enough, they will send you a box of free band aids. And I’m serious.

I should have my 2 doors tomorrow I will install and attach pictures soon
I will install 2 doors 1 upper to cover the upper area with hinges on the side and 1 door with hinges on top so it will close once released that will cover the electoral switch with a smoked plexiglass panel to see the switch without opening the door.

This is an issue in our trailer. I open the control panel door to turn on lights, check the convenience center readout, etc. Then walk away to check on whatever item I needed to open the door for. It never fails that my wife then walks up the stairs and hits her head on the open door. I then hear a tirade on why I can't figure out how to keep the door closed... Based on this post, I'm going to go look for a self-closing hinge.
