Hwy 1 has less grades, much nicer scenery going through the Fraser and Thompson Canyons with several small towns, but takes more time and is not like a freeway. The steepest part is Jackass Mtn. Hwy 5 is a freeway with one long steep uphill section (East bound, Great Bear Snowshed) at about 8%, only one town (Merritt about half way) and is higher in elevation than Hwy1.
I've done both many times without any problems.

If you're staying in Kamloops, be aware that there is a railway siding across the road from the campgound, and a grade on the highway itself. Pretty noisy, with all the jake brakes on the highway, and humping cars on the siding all night. Just FYI.

We took the Freeway and had no troubles at all. Good road.

When we got to Kamloops we found a CG south of town a few miles. Very rustic but nice enough and NO road or rail noise. Some wind noise. Enjoy. Dennis

Take highway 5 and relax. It's quick, 4 lane divided all the way and scenic. Highway 1 is a 2 lane killer IMHO!

I would use either way. I have pulled the Montana up Hwy. 1 several times to 100 Mile House and I pulled our other trailer up Hwy. 5. I will be pulling our Montana up Hwy. 5 next year when we move to Kelowna. You will have no problem on either route. Enjoy your trip.
