Maryland's Road Rules

Our return trip brings us through the state of Maryland. Of all the states it is the only state Woodall's identifies the maximum total length is 55ft. Our Monty is 39ft. but total is just under 60ft. has anyone had an issue going through Maryland with their total length being over 55ft?

Woodall's is only partially correct. If you look at pages 73 and 74 of the Maryland Motor Carrier Handbook, you will see that travel trailers (I can only assume that this includes fifth wheelers) are subjected to a length restriction of 40 feet. The provision on page 74 of 55' is stated for all vehicle combinations other than those listed. I think you are within the intents of the regulations. Here is a link to the 2012 revised manual:

We have traveled 48 states and never had any issue about state length requirements, although we were pulled into a Weight Station in California for a spot check inspection for weight adherance.

I don't doubt your 60 foot measurement, but, I am a bit surprised by it, You don't have your rig or truck listed, you might want to add that to your signature line.

I ask, cause, we are driving a long bed truck that measures close to 22 feet long and a 3295, which standing alone measures about 38 foot. But, hooked up, we are closer to 53 foot, due to the overhang of the 5er over the bed of the truck.

When we had bikes on the front of the prior truck, Big Butt, we were closer to 55 foot.

Good reminder tho for us, since we now have a new truck, Jolly, maybe the next time we are hooked up we should get out that long rule and have another measure.

We drove the I 68 through Maryland on our way back to the stickbuilt recently, no issues, and yes we saw several law enforcement types, sitting in the valleys between the long grades, bet they were looking for someone "coasting" down at higher than posted speeds!

The 60 foot measurement was just a round up. I'll double check the numbers, but I think the exact number is closer to 56 or 57 feet. We are pulling a 3700RL which has a dimension of 38' 7" with a RAM 3500 longbed dually.

Terry,
I measured mine at 55 feet and I have a crew cab long bed pick up. The trailer is 39 feet.

Maximum trailer length in most states is 53 except by permit. Since your truck is not a trailer you do not have a problem.
Combined length limit is around 70' but I cannot remember for sure.

We have a Dodge Maxi Cab so our combined length with the bikes on the back is 57'
