F150 Tow Rating IMPROVED!

This is not a joke. Short bed F150 towing 14,400 GWR 5th wheel. They asked me to tow it out of their spot because they cannot make tight turns (their rear window glass is broken on the driver side). I vigorously told the owners that they are way overweight, but their response was that they were going to get a new diesel next year. To this, I asked which way they were headed because I wanted to go in the opposite direction!

Wow, I pulled our boat (6000 pounds) with our F-150 instead of the dually, just to see how the truck performed. The boat will not be pulled with the F-150 again. The squirelly feel of the truck was not one I want to feel again, power was not an issue, the tail wagging the dog was. I cannot for the life of me imagine what the ride on that truck is like with more than double that weight behind it. Unfortunately, some people have no concept of reality and safety.

I would love to meet the salesman that sold them that 5th wheel. he is probably the one who through the hitch in at no charge! Or the truck salesman that told them "oh ya,that will pull her,no problem". Did they say what kind of diesel? maybe a Isihu??

I certainly thought your title was geared a different route. Wow! I can’t imagine the white knuckles after towing with that combination. I’ve had the tail wagging the dog on previously owned rigs and that isn’t a pleasant experience to say the least. Simply love how the fifth wheel tows that we have now!

Looking at the Ford website there are some F150 equipped (Max Trailer Towing Package) to haul up to 11300# Even figuring on a conservative 15% pin weight that is till almost 1700# on the pin.

The new F150 3.5 Ecoboost has 365 HP, 420 pound feet of TK at 2500 RPMs and is rated to pull 11000 pounds with a payload of 3100 pounds. It has trailer sway control to keep every thing nice and straight without any sway.

Yes the new 150's can tow far more than previously but not 14K.. we have a couple in our Local group pulling a 10K GVW Couger and they are well witin limits.

The bad news is, it's estimated that about 40% of all trailer owners tow overweight. The worse news is that it is not known HOW much overweight these 40% are overweight by - could be 100 lbs, or several tons. I'm guessing these are in the several tons categories.

These examples are beyond what any weight "policemen" can enforce or suggest or tolerate. I can hear dogs howling, children crying and victims cussing.

I hope Michael and Kat post when these folks are on the road and in which direction. We're all gonna want to be off the road when this accident gets underway. Maybe the good news is the trailer is an Alumascape. Aren't those pretty light?

I'm hoping Tom S.'s pictures are a joke (I have seen this before). I especially like the 4x4 and a piece of plywood fabricated under the tailgate and onto the bumper hitch to attempt to reinforce the tailgate to hold up the pin weight. Now that's smart!

Art, did you also notice the chains added to reinforce the cable straps on the tailgate. I seriously don't think this was meant to be a joke.

Ohmigosh.... now that you pointed them out, the gauge of the chains and the S hooks are a little light, but I think the thin tail gate metal will buckle before the chain or hooks fail.

I hope this "joke" is only for towing short distances and very slowly. I can't imagine that thing being roadworthy. Like RacerJoe implies, not much steering is gonna be happening with the front end in the air like that. And I don't think there is any size airbag that could raise that rear end either.

This is sure up there with other ridiculously loaded vehicles that have made the internet circulation. The OP picture with the F-150 towing the fiver isn't as obvious except to experienced drivers that know better. My biggest fear with the OP picture is that the more ignorant will think an F-150 is good to go since they see this and doesn't look as bad. It's ALWAYS about the numbers not the pictures.
