2012 Medicare Part B Premium

The 2012 Medicare Part B Premium was announced this past week.

For those paying $96.40 per month the new 2012 premium will be $99.90 or $3.50 increase per month.

You are encouraged to determine your personal premium as it maybe different than the above announced increase of $3.50 per month.

Boy, you must get some special rates! I just started my SS and Part B and they are subtracting $115.40 a month from my piddly little amount I'm getting. Then they rounded me down to the nearest dollar for the balance I receive too! Must be that extra NC benefit you get!

Note

If your income is above $85,000 (single) or $170,000 (married couple), then your Medicare Part B premium may be higher than $115.40 per month.

Social Security will use the income reported two years ago on your IRS income tax return to determine your premium (if unavailable, SSA will use income from three years ago

Well if I(we) made $170,000 two years ago, I'd like to know where it went and how I got it! Sure wasn't from the PO retirement I got! Got to be something else to make that difference. Maybe difference between worker and management! LOL Sorry, just had to throw that in!

Those paying the $115.40 monthly premium are not necessarily paying due to joint income over $170K per year. Those that became Medicare eligible recently came in to the program at a higher premium rate and not predicated on income but date they start Medicare.

Jan-- I think you heard wrong! It's been a rumor going around the PO since before I retired! Would I be owning a 2004 Montana if the rumor was correct?!!?
Dennis-- I think you may be correct on that! My SS started as of Oct. 2011 but my Medicare did not start until Nov. 2011. That is the problem with being so young!LOL

Medicare? Part A, B, C, D? What is that? Oh, got it. By the time we're eligible for Medicare, we won't be...And we have paid both sides for a long, long time...

Thanks! I have been trying to figure out where all that money came from and went if my Medicare payment was based on that! I was told when I signed up that my payment would be higher because of starting it this month! Oh well, one of the problems with being a "youngster"! LOL

Rondo for 2012 your B premium will drop to 99.90. You can look on the soc sec site where it talks about that.

Unfortunately I fall under a totally different catagory because of some investments and inheritance. I have been notified that my contribution will double come next month! It's not fair and I can challenge it but the lady I talked to just this week told me she thought it would be a futile challenge.

My wife would love to pay $115 per month. With a $2500 deductible her insurance premium for a Healthy Virginian is $999 per month. And they wonder why some people don't have health insurance.

With the projected government cuts that will effect medicare payments to providers going into effect on 1 January, many providers may well say goodby to their medicare patients because they cannot afford the losses they will incur. Medicare, the nation's largest ponzi scheme!

I love Medicare. I had the Healthy Virginian BCBS plan with $5000 deductible and the premium was $1200+/ month for 3 years. Medicare is great if they don't ruin it.

My understanding, also, is that those currently paying $115 will get a premium decrease to $99.90. Being brand new to Medicare (starts in February and I already received the card and literature) I did some research and found that information about the decrease. I think I found it on the medicare website, if I recall. So it's a small increase for some and a decrease for others.
