There is only so many BTU in a gallon of fuel no matter weather you pull with a Ford Chevy or Dodge. Your driving habits will determine your fuel mileage. Since we all pull in different places, different conditions, temperature, speeds, your fuel mileage will be different than other peoples. There is no magic in any of these trucks.

If you just want a newer truck that's one thing but you will never gain back the additional cost of the newer truck, even used, on a mieage increase.
I have an '06 F350 SRW 6.0 and have ranged from 9 -13 mpg (calculated) but it all depends on the terrain and how heavy footed I am.
The trailer is the 2955RL at about 11,600#, rig wgt just a hair under 20,000#. The 9 mpg was on a long uphaul against a headwind.

Gents, after reading all this, I shouldn't feel bad about the old Silverado. She now has about 109K on her and I have always calculated mileage manually. It's like most have stated here....it all depends on terrain, habits, highway conditions, etc. The only thing I have ever added to the truck is, a low restriction washable air filter.

I have discovered that it seems the engine and tranny are a perfect match and I can get 12 to 13 mpg at 59 mph. That's with it in tow/haul mode and cruise set. Especially, here in northern Indiana, southern Michigan and western Ohio because of the flat land. Now, when I get on an interstate and set cruise at 62mph, it does drop down to around 11.5 to 12mpg. But, get her in any mountains......she smokes and drops down to about 9mpg but, doesn't miss a beat!

I have thought about buying a new truck to get better mileage but, here's the thing. This old Chevy has been paid for for years, it still looks good, she is mechanically sound and I wouldn't be afraid to drive it anywhere and.....I think I can buy a heck of a lot fuel for $60,000.00!!

Now that our 2007 Ram with 6.7L diesel is finally broken in, we're averaging 11 to 12, usually in the upper half of that. Sometimes we do better than that but 11.5 to 12 is the most common. I normally tow at about 60 to 62 mph.

Jack, ours didn't break in to the point we saw a pretty sudden increase in mpg until about 66,000 miles. The truck now has 80,000 on it so I've decided the mpg increase is permanent. Before breakin we averaged 10 to 11 most of the time.

Thanks Steve. I am working hard to put miles on the new truck....currently at just over 8K

I sure must be doing something wrong... Pulling a '09 3400 with a 2010 F350 diesel, I only get about 8mpg. I'd be elated is I could get anywheres near 10 or 11. I can get about 13 or 14 solo.

Really don't care about fuel mileage if I was I would of bought a Prius. As long as the truck pulls and the trailer follows I am just fine.

we are @ 25.5k more or less GCVW and run 62/65 MPh. many variables but we all seem to do no mater what the truck in the 10 to 11 mpg range. Our average was 10.6 on the trip down to Florida this year and that was about average.I figure a average of 10MPg at the end of a average day pulling this anchor is not bad.
