Spare Tire Carrier

I was rehanging my spare tire after a recent tire problem and noticed the channel iron that the spare tire winch is bolted to was bent down a couple of inches. I have removed the carrier assembly from my 2010 326RLT Montana. Attached is a pic where it is lying upside down on a work bench with the winch facing up. The crank is off to the left. It was bent so far that the crank was rubbing against the RV fender.

I'm going to weld a 65" long piece of 1 1/2" angle iron to the side of each piece of angle iron that runs from frame to frame for extra support. Then going to cut out the bent channel iron and weld in a heavier piece of channel iron and remount the winch.

Anyone else having this problem? May want to check as if it bends far enough it will cause the winch to reel in all of the cable with the tire not bottoming out on the 2-4" angle beraces which will leave the tire hanging loose and eventually fall off it's hanger. The only tires that have been on this winch have been the factory spare and one of the aluminum spoke factory rims. Spare has been off 4 times since I bought it new. Another piece of quality Montana design.

Bill

This seems to be one of those things that work fine for many folks and totally crap out for others.

Quality control does not seem to be a priority for the spare tire mechanism.

If you look on several brands of fivers that have the undermount spare tire carrier ... most all are bowed down ... maybe not as much as yours. Lippert has obviously gone to a lighter angle iron in recent years as my 05 didn't have the bow effect. I did what you are doing ... beefed up the angle iron crosswise on the frame.
