SURGE PROTECTOR

I just purchased a EMS-PT50C surge protector with the lock bracket on it.
My question is should I use a cable or chain to run thru the bracket to lock the unit to the power post ?? Now that I'm writing this I'm thinking a chain would be best. What length do you think I would need ??

We have the EMS-PT50C surge protector and we use a 3 foot chain. It wraps around the post and leaves us some extra. Have not had a problem yet.

I use a Brinks cable about 10 ft long. Most of the time I'm able to lock it to the rig.

I put a chain around the SG and power stalk, then covered the whole thing with an old tire cover.

So far I don't even lock mine. Started to but it got to be to much of a hassle. Haven't had a bit of problem. Now that I said this I am probably jinxed......lol

I have a 3' cable that worked ok I just found that wrapping it around the power stand all they had to do was unplug it slide it up over the top. So I just gave up. I suppose if you got a long enough cable you could lock it to the trailer. My next one will be hard wired!!

PT50C from RV Upgrades.

I use the chain. It can wrap around most pedestals a couple times, but the nice thing about a chain link is that it can be locked along any of the links. So sometime I just go around once and let the extra just hang-on-down. In most instances I have been able to just go around the pedestal and the chain is tight enough that it cannot be slipped over th electrical box. In a couple situations I have had to include the metal pipe water spigot in the tie down. I have not been in any situation where I have not been able to secure it.

However, I do realize that it is to keep the honest people honest. A pair of bolt cutters will make mince steel out of the clip on the PT50C, and in some cases, if big enough bolt cutters, they can cut the chain link. But that is a pretty big bolt cutter for my chain. The chain I use is between 2' to 3' feet. I've not measured it, it was just laying around the house.

The reason I put the old tire cover on is so people won't see the chain...or the SG. If somebody questions me about the cover I tell them it's to keep the rain out of the electrical connection.

I bought my EMS from Tweety's for $349 which was the cheapest price I could find.
I decided to go with the EMS after my stick house suffered an electrical surge & we lost TV's, DVD Intercom unit, etc. Also, I've heard reduced voltage is just as deadly as over voltage.
In any case, I feel much safer now.

If I buy the 50 amp progressive industries portable unit, can I plug my dog bone into a 30 amp service at the campground and then plug the 50 amp power management unit into it and finally my 50 amp shore power cord into the 50 amp power management unit, ultimately running to the RV?

We have not locked, chained or covered it for over 5 years and scores of C.G. We still have it. Personal choice.

I've been told that the surge protection is sacrificial. Every time it stops a surge, it loses some capability. Bigger surge, more loss. Eventually, it's useless. Hopefully, it has some kind of indicator that surge capacity is still available. So, having one for a long time may mean that it's not working well and the next surge may be the last.

On the up side, AFAIK, the 50A units tend to have more capacity (stated in joules) than the 30A units. This capacity is available regardless of the connection. So, a 50A unit is said to be better than a 30A, when connected to a 30A source.
