The word in the West is that the "distillers" are changing to the winter formula. Diesel was at $3.36 on Sunday near my house! I haven't left the house since. It could be worse. I could be in Canada.

Jumped from $2.999 to $3.159 the other day ! Today the price is up to $3.199 . Just what is this price increase for--nobody can tell me at the gas stations? I heard the price of crude went up $5 a barrel but that shouldn't have made that much of a change. Winterizing formula is not that much more expensive- adding some anti-gelling isn't that expensive. I think the companies just saw a chance to charge more since the usage is going to go down now for the winter-- no more farming use and not as much of the RVs and TV on the roads now either-- and they don't want to loose the profits they became use to over the summer!

On our 3600+ mile trip across America in October, the highest we paid was $3.409 and the lowest was $2.799. Here in central North Carolina it has varied from $2.989 to $3.159 in the last week.

Just filled up diesel at Flying J in Calgary, Alberta Canada.
This morning the price was 97.9/litre or 3.91/Cdn gallon. The American gallon is smaller at 3.78 litres, which makes the price $3.70 per gallon. Can you spell "being gouged" by the oil companies. Alberta is usually the least expensive in Canada, which is due to less "tax gouging" than other provinces.

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (the oil Province), diesel is at 94.9 cents a liter or $3.59 a U.S. gallon and we mine and refine the majority of diesel that is consumed in North America!!

Getting pricey here in FLA as well. However, one of the big problems this time of year is not so much the "winterizing" of fuel as it is the switch at the refineries from making diesel and gas to making heating fuel for the coming winter. Refinery capacity has not been allowed to grow in this country for decades, yet the demand for all types of fuels has risen exponentially. The refineries have to cut production of diesel to increase production of heating oil. Lower supply + higher demand + higher crude prices = higher prices at the pump. Answer? Allow more refineries to be built and open up new oil fields.

If it were only that simple! It is true there hasn’t been a new refinery built in the U.S. since 1976, the result of extremely tight environmental restrictions, not-in-my-back-yard community opposition, and the high cost of new construction. But that doesn't appear to be a major inhibitor to production. In fact the number of operable refineries in the U.S. has dropped from 300 (1982) down to 148 (2010).

The major price determination is the per barrel cost of oil. I have never understood why all crude costs the same (around $87 per barrel currently) regardless of where it is found: Alaska, Canada, Gulf of Mexico, Venezuela, or the Middle East. Consumption has been flat for the last six months (or more). Reserves are stretching the capacity to store them. So what is happening?
It appears that cost is rising due to a number of dynamics including a perception the U.S. economy is recovering, the value of the dollar v. other currencies, and my favorite, speculators in the gas futures market. Remember how the price fell from $5 to $2 per gallon when the economy went in the dumper?
But returning to the original topic, here in Northern California, the price of diesel has risen $0.10 a gallon in the last week to $3.29.

It is my uneducated opinion that rising fuel prices, particularly diesel, are arbitrary and artificial. If there is a supply and demand issue, it is a manipulated function to elevate the price and line the pockets of the few at the expense of the many.
