Will this work
I want to install an inverter and bought a 1500watt at Harbor Freight and 6 feet of #2 cable. I plan on using it for watching TV only. It is a modified sine wave. The instructions say to only use with 12 volt batteries, and to connect batteries in parallel only. I have 2 -6 volt golf cart batteries. Will this work for me and how would I hook it up? TIA

Hey Russ, your two 6V batteries make 12V and you are good to go. I've used a HF inverter for the last 12 years to power my TV, Stereo/DVD, and Satellite receiver. All those devices convert the 120V AC to 5-10V DC and the MSW is not an issue.
My Montana has once circuit which feeds the entertainment center. I intercepted it and added a DPDT switch so I can select either 120V shore power or 120V inverter power. That saves a little effort switching from one source to another.

All it is looking for is 12 volts no matter where it comes from. I can run my TV off a converter. The way mine is wired I cut the converter on and plug the circuit in to it in place of the 120 volt plug plug.

When they say “in parallel only” they were obviously thinking only of multiple 12 volt batteries. Two 6 volt batteries must be connected in SERIES to get 12 volts. I think they just wanted to ensure you used 12 volts and nothing higher.

That is what I thought, I just wanted to confirm with the pros! Hey Carl, I am not sure what a DPDT switch is?

A Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) switch (as pointed to by BB_TX) is designed to feed a power source to one of two attached devices. The switch selects which devices gets the [power. It can also work in reverse. You can connect two different power sources and one device and, by flipping the switch, select which power source is used to power the device

Be very careful with inverters that are listed as modified sign wave inverters; they can easily damage electronics and cause noise in audio and video equipment. What's installed in RV's are pure or true sign wave inverters.

I would be wary of the modified sine wave instead of true sine wave. I am not saying it won’t work I just don’t always have great luck when hoping something doesn’t mess up my electronics. I still have a 1800 or 2000 watt Modified Sine Wave inverter thatI have been to chicken to wire in for my satellite and tv’s.

I got a true sine wave for the very reason we are talking about.

Two important points noted above....two six volt batteries must by put in series to get 12 volts and get the pure sine wave inverter, you'll be glad you did.
