Devil's Tower! a photographer's dream...
I took more photos of it than a tour bus full of Japanese tourists.
Distant pictures, pictures from every turn-out in Wyoming, close-up pictures, pictures of the climbers on the rock face, and pictures of the boulder field all around the base.
I got photo tips from a local Cowboy, a short fella with a wooden smile.

Devil's Tower was a highlight of our trip out west a number of years ago. It was shortly after Close Encounters of a Third Kind was released

The strange thing is no matter how many times you go you still snap off all those pictures. I'm not sure we have more pictures of anything else than Devil's Tower.

Did you see the big Prairie Dog community nearby? I remember driving to and from the Devil's tower parking lot to the main road and seeing hundreds of them along a certain part of the road. Are they still there? I know how much you just love those rodents.
We were there in mid-September quite a few years ago and there were about a dozen climbers on all sides of Devil's Tower. I was surprised how many there were but maybe it's because the weather was nice. It didn't seem like anyone was coming down, just going up. Must have been because we were there early afternoon. I always wondered how long they took.
The Devil's Tower is one of the strangest sights I've ever seen. It makes no sense that that formation just seems to jut up out of nowhere. There is nothing like it anywhere within Miles. For example, I've seen Postpile formations and monuments that look like they almost belong there, but Devil's Tower? No wonder it has the word Devil in it. How the Devil it got there I'll never know and I don't remember reading a reasonable explanation, yet.
I hope you do get over to the Custer Historical Battlefield. Even though it's hallowed ground, it's real interesting. I had the same hallowed feelings back when me and DW visited Gettysburg.

Hmmmmm. That must have been quite along trip along the walkway at the tower. I noticed that your avatar shows a lot of black hair and your picture shows a lot of grey. See what doing all those mods will do to you???

I read somewhere that Devils Tower is the lava from an ancient volcano- Apparently the mountain has been eroded and only the lava remains- Your thoughts? Don

When we came by there we stopped at the lot where you drop the 5er and had a picnic. watched 2 guys climbing up they were about 1/2 way up at about 2 in the afternoon. I got pics of them looked like they were resting in a crevis then went on. When they get to the top don't they have to climb back down or can you get a taxi down the other side where no one can see!! LOL. where they were at would have been a long day to get back down. Ozz there was a great old store on hyw 24 at aladdin with a population of 14 IIRCC still had a working wood heater brings back alot of memorys. post office on one side spirits store on the other in same building.

We have stayed at Devil's Tower several times. It is a family tradition that we watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind and eat mash potatoes for dinner. Good times!

I'm pretty surprised that Ozz puts up a post about a fabulous picture taking opportunity with no pictures and you all let him get away with it. He can't claim ignorance on how to put up pictures because he managed to get a shot of his ribs and beer in the post.
By the way did you all notice the little garnish on the ribs. Who the heck makes ribs and puts little green thingys on them anyway?

Lame! Picture of the wooden guy staring at the tower. By the way, how about that pic embedded in the post. You're holding out on us. You've got more tricks than you let on.

You have to get up to speed.. I have a whole story about the Mc-Ribs, and, the Devils tower pictures as well. Have you been away? You got's to pay attention, or things just slip away from you. Take your meds and settle down and things will be just fine.
Be my fb friend and you can play too

Jim and Sue, you've now been someplace we've not yet been. I've had Devil's Tower on my list since we first started fulltiming but it has never quite worked out for us to get there. Someday...

Steve, not only the Devils Tower, but all the sights, towns and places around it. Sundance is a sleepy little town that explodes during the Sturgis rally, very interesting places.
