Yes, we go that way all the time, through Gardner and Westcliffe. We even take the short-cut down to Cotipaxi rather than going on to Texas Creek.

As to 69, it is surely not a freeway and not even up to Texas state highways, but it saves a lot of miles and we have never had a problem towing a 34' fifth-wheel. The road is narrow and curvy but we always enjoy the area around Westciffe with the Sangre de Christe mountains on the western horizon and the broad valley stretching out for miles.

We usually stop at the top of the pass near Wolf Creek Ranch. Sometimes we see the large bison herd there.

Back to the route: it is along drive through sparsely populated areas. But it is the route we always take to Salida, Buena Vista, or to Gunnison across Monarch Pass. I hope this helps. I will be glad to answer any specific questions as we have been over this route many times.

Have driven that route many times in a Class A (38ft diesel pusher). No problems. As PadreDW mentioned, the roads are a little narrow, but the scenery is well worth it. Will be driving it with a Fifth Wheel for the 1st time this year.
