Just a reminder; we desperately need campfire wood!
1190 hours (50 days) until the start of the "Circling of the Montanas" at Quartzsite!

Robbie,
We will bring what I can get in the bed of the truck with the rig hooked up. I think I still have some oak in the firewood pile

Robbie It looks like the circle is almost ready to go to a oval according to the arial view of last year but it is going to look fabulus from the air to bad Q-site made it almost impossable for the hang gliders to fly over and take pictures to many liciencing fees or greed by certain promoters of Q-site.
Getting closer.................

Robbie,
I bought my solar panels and intended to install them before heading for Quartzsite. Early snow hit and I still have 1" of snow on the roof of the Monty. Looks like If I want solar, I have to wait till I get to Quartzsite. So, for those that want to watch, or help, bring your ladder. I'll be installing the controller, panels, mounts, concentrator box, conduit, and all wiring. While we're at it, I'll change out the 1000 Watt Xantrex inverter with a new 2000 Watt HF inverter. Going to have to do it right away so the new freezer will keep the tamales frozen!
While I'm at it my research shows that my Monty has steel trusses in the roof. I need to locate those trusses while on the roof. The only device I can think of is somewhere I have seen a nail finder. It was a little magnet that would spin around in a stud finder......I think. Any suggestions on how to locate those steel trusses? I need to be fairly precise. I need to install the leading edge of the solar mounts through the roof and into a truss if possible. Any suggestions on how to locate the trusses?
See Ya There,
John

John, you might try a metal detector, I'll have mine at Quartzsite.

Keith,
Not bad! I have a couple I am bring also but mine have what is called a double D coil. I can't get very precise with mine. It will start screaming when I get 6 or 8 inches away. I imagine those metal trusses are about as wide as a 2x4. Do you think you could identify the two edges of a truss with your detector? Is it cold in Adin? It's 11:50 AM and 37 degrees. Down in low 20's at night.

John, I have a small, adjustable-sensitivity metal detector marketed by Black&Decker and some really, really strong magnets that ought to locate steel trusses very precisely. They'll be in my tool kit.

Are you sure the trusses are made of steel and not aluminum?

Chet,
Awhile back Nailbender had a tree fall on his Montana. Don did the salvage work and told me his trusses were made of steel. That was some time ago so I called him to confirm before posting. Don says his was a 2006 and definitely steel trusses. Mine is a 2001 so it would be prudent for me to pull the fantastic fan down and stick my hand in there with a magnet and make sure.
Now 49Merc says the new stud finders should detect steel. I didn't know that. I have at least 3 around here none with the little nail finder magnet. I'll give that a try.
Firetrucker, Thanks for the offer. Looks like we'll find them one way or another.
Thanks All,
John

May you enjoy all the power the sun offers. Dreaming of the day I can meet you there at Q. I had just assumed the frame work was all aluminum. Another reason to be careful with a persons assumptions.

I just looked at a 2008 brochure and it states "5 inch fabricated galvanized steel truss rafters on 16 inch centers" if that's any help.

John,
The 2004 model year brochure states 5" welded aluminum truss rafters on 16" centers, 2005 brochure states 5" fabricated steel truss on 16" centers.

WorkerB, I am so glad we have something to do, the agenda was looking pretty slim, way to much sittin' 'round jawin' and campfire stuff...
We drove through Quartzsite, yesterday. We only counted 3 RV's on the Polmosa Road, but there were lots in the Long Term Visitors Area (LTVA).
The sun was shining, 72*, blue skies, and the songbirds were singing!
BTW, did you know there are:
1047 hours until the start of the "Circling of the Montanas" at Quartzsite?

"songbirds were singing" REALLY??
We hardly see any birds at Quartzsite and never songbirds. Mostly just a few Ravens.

Ok, you caught me, they were singing buzzards!
BTW, Grant and Kathy, good to know you are reading the MOC, thought that post might bring the professional birders out!

Robbie,
Buzzards don't sing.
See you in a few weeks.
