Alabama Rt 231 (Montgomery to Tallahassee)

We are heading out between December 16th and 18th for Ft. Myers. We are taking interstate routes to Montgomery then getting on U.S. RT 231 to Tallahassee. Any suggestions for campgrounds around Dothan AL. Or for that matter any good ones along any part of Rt. 231 that we would be happy with. There is a Ozark Travel Park just north of Dothan that we were looking at. Then the next stop we were looking at south was Ocala FL, the Ocala Sun RV Resort, which is Passport America. Any past experience in these spots would be helpful, or any other suggested parks in those areas.

Consider making a detour to just East of Destin, FL on the Gulf and stay at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. You will not be disappointed. Information is on Reserveamerica.com. This is by far the most beautiful RV park we have ever stayed in, if you can get on the loop, it is recommended heartily.

The Ozark Trail appears to now be a KOA park. I have stayed at the park about 4 times over the past 10 years and it is OK. Nothing great and nothing bad...........just OK for a place to spend the night. It is an older park and a little tight in places. North of this park in Troy, AL is Deer Run Park. New facility with plenty of room. Most all are pull thru and long/level sites. They had hot chocolate and popcorn for you when you check in. http://www.deerrunrvpark.com/Home_Page.php

I agree with Doberman that Deer Run in Troy, AL is the best for your money. Ozark KOA ia a little pricy for what you get. There is another one in Ozark that you can check out in RVPark Reviews. Think it's Mr. D's that's good for an overnight. Any of these would be good for a one night stay.

Bingo, I'll second Top Sail Hill State Park. Love the park. I'll be working there the months of May and June as park volunteer. Decided to stay thru the middle of July camping, not working.

I can't recommend any specific park, since we parked our rig at a private estate just outside Andersonville, GA.

For Civil War historical buffs, I would recommend this Union POW site: The Andersonville National Historic Site, located near Andersonville, Georgia, preserves the former Camp Sumter (also known as Andersonville Prison), a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp. It will bring a tear to your eye as you walk the area and visit the museum filled with artifacts and photographs. On a side note, the Confederate Commandant of Andersonville, Henry Wirz was the only Confederate officer accused of, convicted of, and executed for war crimes after the Civil War.

Just head east of Montgomery on the Interstate, then get off in Columbus, Georgia and follow the road to Andersonville. After leaving this historic site you can continue on to Tallahassee, where we stayed directly on the Gulf Coast when we were through there in 2010.
