Slide Pump Oil

The owners manual calls out for type A transmission fluid in the pump, but the fluid in it is clear not your typical red die. Am I missing something here or is there clear type trany fluid or is it bottle jack oil?

Thanks Maurice

This topic has been touched upon several times as new members come onboard ... go to Wally World and get the housebrand automatic tranny fluid ... priced right, works good, lasts a long time(unless you blow a hose), colored for easy identification.

Yes, just ge the cheapest transmission fluid and put it in. Remember to only check it when the slides are in, not out. Also, don't overfill. I monitor mine and only had to add oil when I had a leak in a hydraulic connection.

MIMF: Do I need to add a cooler to the slideout pump? During high speed use I see the temperature rise a degree or two with my add on gauge. Please Ozz read this mod.LOL

bigmurf,

No, you do not need to add a cooler.

That ATF you put in the pump reservoir will last forever! Why? Because no mater how long you ever run that pump, you will NEVER subject that fluid to the stresses and heats that it needs to endure in a million years!! If this stuff stands up to our high dollar trucks, there is nothing you are going to with that pump to ever break down that fluid. :>)

You say the fluid temp rises a degree a two. That is because it is being compressed to a small extent. What happens to air when it is compressed? It heats up. What happens to metals when it is compressed or forced to change shape? It heats up. And I'll bet the samething will happen to you if you are compressed and forced to change shape.

See where I'm going?

You don't need to cool or apply a heat exchanger to cool that fluid. It is never cycled thru the pump long enough to get it hot enough to damage anything.

Just my 2 cents.

Now that I have learned what type of fluid to use does anybody know why mine keeps leaking out and covering my battery boxes while the trailer is just sitting? Gasket bad or O ring? It's not a pressure leak.

clutch: I'm assuming you have the slide pump like mine with the white plastic reservoir fastened to the pump housing with 3-4 small capscrews. There is a plastic flange on the reservoir with an o-ring for a seal. Sometimes you can replace the o-ring with good results ... sometimes the flange becomes warped and the o-ring doesn't make a difference. I happened to find a metric o-ring ever so slightly bigger in sectional diameter than what was on it ... MIMF may be along with his perspective.
Some have had the entire pump replaced under the manufacturers warranty.

Hmmm, maybe a Mountaineer issue? Ours does the same thing. Battery box is always oiled down good. She's in the shop now. Leak was on the punch list I gave service manager (second time). Maybe I need to direct the tech to this site where he will know how to fix it.

Thank you for your reply. I suspect it is either a gasket or an O ring. I'll just keep it topped off until we have time to take it to a dealer.

contact Lippert--we got a new pump when ours leaked while sitting--there was some connection that made it leak. I thought it was my imagination that the oil was in the pan under the pump and i wiped it out carefully and gues what--it happened again so we called Lippert.

On our other unit 2005 297RKS Mountaineer it did the same thing. We had the pump replaced under the warranty and then a line went bad and started leaking fluid again. All was fixed under warranty.
