7.3 PSD fuel filter and removal tool

I've seen some info on the site about where to get fuel filters, etc for diesels. I also need to get a fuel filter "wrench" for a 2002 7.3 PSD. What sites do you recommend?

I use the Racor filters from powerstrokeshop.com. The only tool I use to change the filter is a screwdriver laid flat on top of the filter. Mine does not require a special tool.

I use a pair of pliers and insert the end into the top of the filter and turn the handles.

I use 2 large screwdrivers. Put the tip of each screwdriver in one of the recessed areas 180 degrees apart from each other, cross the screwdrivers, and use one against the other. Reverse the process to tighten it up.

Craig, if you have 1/2" drive and extention (3") thats all you need. I use that on my 99 7.3 and get my filters from any auto supply. I use Wix

tom41 is right on the money. 1/2" drive works great. When tighting make sure you don't over tighten the filter and ruin the "O" ring. I tighten a little after contact and crank the engine.
If it's leaking shut it off and retighten a little more.
Don't forget to pull the lever on the fuel filter case and drain the water and goop out. Then put the new filter on.

I've got a 2000 Powerstroke ... here's the filter housing and a wrench I made out of 1/8" steel about 6" long. A dotco, a vice, and a little effort works out alot better than a pair of channel locs or 2 screw drivers. It just fits over the ribs in the filter lid. I made a square hole in the wrench to accomodate a 3/8" ratchet. Or ... you can just buy the wrench.

There are several guys on EBay that can give you a good deal on original equipment Motorcraft filters. Racor (IN F4595 or IN F4596) are good filters also. Wix is also a good filter, but changed their design on the sealing gasket from a lip seal to square cut seal ... doesn't work as well as the old lip seal.

Motorcraft # FD 4595 1994-1998
Motorcraft # FD 4596 1998.5-200?

I made a tool out of a short section of PVC pipe of the appropriate diameter - I think 2" or 2.5". What you do is notch the pipe end to match the filter top and then drill several holes thru the other end's side so you can insert a screwdriver thru it to use as a lever to unthread the top.

I think you guys are working to hard to get your Fuel filter out, the same filter wrench (Band type) that you use for your oil filter fits perfectly.
