Route 9 off I-70 in Colorado

We will be driving west from Denver on I-70. We are staying at the Red Mountain RV Park in Kremmling the week of Aug 6th to attend our grandson's baseball tournament in Steamboat Springs. We're pulling a 3295 and we're wondering about the steep grades and passes.

We towed a 3295RK (2003 model) all the way across Colorado on I-70 and it was no problem. The steeper hills will slow you down, of course. You don't list the tow vehicle. Some of the downgrades will smoke your brakes if you use them too heavily. Let your transmission help out on keeping speed under control and use the brakes for short intervals when needed.

I've never been on CO 9 but since it leaves I-70 at Silverthorne I bet that is a beautiful drive. Good luck. I'd be interested in your thoughts about highway 9 after towing it.

That is a nice drive with good roads from Silverthorne all the way to Steamboat Springs. If you have a diesel, you'll not have any problems, if you have a gas engine, you will have somewhat reduced power since the altitude is around 7,000' for both places.

If I'm not mistaken you'll pull Rabbit Ears Pass which is one of many beautiful passes in CO. Not sure of your TV but if it's a diesel you'll have no issues, just take it slow and steady.

We pulled that entire route (starting in Buena Vista and going all the way through Steamboat Springs) in June of 2005. A very nice drive and no difficulty at all. I would recommend it.

We were on our way to Yellowstone and decided to go this route by choice.

Our trip

Thanks for the great replies. Yes, we have a diesel F250 so maybe the Turbo will get us up and down the mountains. We plan to unhook and take some "side trips" while there. We want to drive over to Rocky Mountain National Park and also we plan to go to the Dinosaur National Monument. Needless to say, there's not many mountains where we come from around Ft. Worth.
