Help Me Deal With This Broker

I'm a current Montana owner and I'd like to stay that way next month when I purchase a newer coach. The RV broker I am dealing with is a great guy, I like him a lot, but he's trying hard to convince me that Montana quality has fallen off a cliff in recent years and I need to consider other brands. Right now I'm holding firm — I want another Montana — but I need a little support here from owners of newer Montanas. So...what about it, is the quality still as high as it was when my 2011 model was built? Not trying to start a big argument, I just want to be sure I'm good to go with a newer Montana. Thank you.

Ed,

We are very happy with our rig. I would still be willing to consider other brands as a way to compare. None of the RV brands are know for high quality.

I think you can get a Quality Montana. The rub is they are making so many that their quality is not consistent. That is why some folks will tell you they have had no real issues and others will tell you theirs is bad.. We looked at other brands in a similar price range. they did not have the same quality that ours had. We were fortunately enough to see ours before the dealer got to touch it. outside of the 50lbs of sawdust and the bazillion of bugs it was ready to go.

There are those here who have had issues. But I think the majority have been happy. If you frequent RV.net (non specific brand forum) you will see people post about issues with pretty much every manufacturer. Even high dollar Mobile Suites.

Unless you are willing to move-up in the price range, we feel that the Montana is the best bang for the buck. In other words, at the Montana price range there is no better rig. If you want higher quality, then move up to the Mobile Suites, but you will pay for it.

There is always something "better" if you want to spend the money.

We love our Montana.

Overall we are happy with our current Montana but it is NOT as well built as our 2008 or our 2012 units.....ESPECIALLY the 2012 Hickory Edition.

We traded our 2010 for a 2017. Yes there are a couple trim things that aren't quite as good, but overall there are some real improvements in the frame and other infrastructure that had to cost Keystone more to make the improvements. Most of the quality issues I've seen and heard about come from the high countries, but they are a less expensive and lighter weight rig. If we were to buy another rig it would be another Montana.

If I ever buy another, Van Leigh and Artic Fox are getting a solid chance from me.

I knew a small RV dealer. He sold a few and did a lot of repair work. He had a saying that I remember. Once you get the skin off of campers or people there isn’t much difference in them.

I don't think there are hardly any out there now that can compare to those made 9 to 10 years ago. Unless it's Custom Built most are turned out as fast as they can.

I bought a 2017 HC. Like other owners of HC I know, there have been a few minor or cosmetic problems but nothing major! Almost 30,000 miles and about 200 nights a year ~~ I would probably not consider anything but another HC.

I feel we were lucky to find this forum long before we purchased our Montana.
We would read all the issues with Montana’s , kinda scary but no other forums had the input like here.
Personally I think here we just see so so much input it might make some think there are lots of problems.
We’ve had a couple issues but very happy with our purchase.

IMO our 2013 3402 is of better quality than our 06 3400. We are long timers in both units and we had issues.

I'm very pleased with my 2015 3100RL and have fulltimed in it for the past couple of years. The only difficulties I've experienced were vendor related. No regrets, here,

I think build quality has slipped across the board. We have a 2006 Montana 2955RL, and haven’t seen anything in that price range we would trade for. Your broker is probably right, but it’s not just Montanas.

When considering owners posting about problems, you must also consider numbers. The more units a manufacturer sells, the more units that may have problems. If Brand A sells 10,000 units and has a 5% unit problem rate, that is 500 units. If Brand B sells 1,000 units and has a 5% unit problem rate, that is 50 units. Brand A has 10 times more problem units than Brand B, but the likelihood of having a problem with either brand is the same, 5%. Example only, I have no idea what the actual percentage of any brand is.

Montana advertises "best selling luxury 5er for 18 consecutive years" with over 100,000 sold. So yes, there will be more postings about a Montana with issues.

I've had an 04 2955 and now have a 2016 3160. The quality of build now is way less than previously IMO. However, you would be hard pressed to find very good quality in anything but a ridiculously high priced unit.

Be prepared to fight dealers, fix your own problems, and take the bad with the good. In the end, you have to like rving enough to overcome the negatives.

I have owned three 5th wheels and a travel trailer all from different manufacturers. All have had issues. Some minor and some major. We are totally happy with our 2016 3160 RL Legacy. If you want a Montana, then don't let your RV broker change your mind.
