Penguin Low Profile Air Conditioner

We are considering putting in the Low Profile Penguin II air. Has anyone had trouble with the this unit icing up?? Or any problems period? We can not go with the regular unit as our storage garage only has 13 ft. With the low profile I will have 5.5 inches to spare.

No problems with the low profile Penquin installed this year. Went with the 13.5 and it works well with the 15 in the front. Hardest part of the job was getting it on the roof.

Thunderman: Did you duct it also. We would like ours ducted since all the wiring is there and the control sensor wire to the comfort cool. We are not thinking of putting it in ourselves but just wondering what way you went and how hard it was.

Mine is not ducted, nor have not had any trouble in 8 years with it. The dealership installed it for me when I bought my coach back in 2004.

I did not connect to the existing duct work but I believe I could have done so. Have really enjoyed the trouble free unit here in Texas. The wiring was in place which made the job quite easy.

We had that unit installed on our 2955 and it worked fine for us. It was ducted and controled by the CCC, would run the main 15K unit during the day, and switch to the 13.5K in the evening while watching the Tele, then back to the main unit at bed time. I would measure to be sure. We were right at 13', give or take an inch with it installed and connected to the TV.

Thanks all for the reports. We have measured the garage opening if we added 9.5 inches to the front. We will have 5.5 inches with the low profile to clear the opening.

Bill, with your side aisle bath floorplan if you go non ducted you are wasting your money. All the air from the front unit will be trapped in the bedroom, and the back unit will get little help. I know because my dealer did this to me when I bought new. I had to go back and insist on getting converted to ducted after a couple of trips. The twin ducted setup works great. For some that have the open center aisle the non ducted is OK as the air will blow back through the trailer from the front. But side aisle means you definitely need ducted.

We installed the Penguin 13.5 about a year ago and are very happy with it. We have not had any issues with icing and it is a nice compliment to the standard 15 in the rear of the rig. It is wired in with the Comfort Control Center and works as it should. Ours is connected to the ducting which is nice, but if we want to cool the bedroom quickly, we can do so by just opening the dump.

Thanks for all your input. I did have concerns if we unducted that the bedroom would be an ice box since we have the bathroom on the side. Definitely will insist the ducted system. Thanks so much.

We had CW install the Low Profile Penguin II in our 2007 3400RL three weeks ago, just before our vacation. We have been in 100 degree temps before with our Monty and the one AC couldn’t keep our rig lower than 85+…which was just too much for the dog and me. The DW, being a lizard, loves the heat and is usually outside lying in the sun while the dog and I are inside trying to survive. Knowing that we could be in 100+ degree temps during our vacation in eastern Washington this year, and with us living in western Washington where it seldom get above 85 degrees, we felt it important to get the second AC… you know for the Dog. The only problem was that the state park we had reservations for the first part of our vacation only had 30 amps…so for the first three days at 105, 107, & 103 the dog and I suffered. But when we moved on to the next “RV Park” where they had 50 amps we were able to kick on both units and the Monty stayed in the 70s…nice. The only issue I have with the Penguin II is that the fan is loud.

I just brought my trailer home from storage. 87 degrees inside the unit and 95 degrees outside temp. I only have 30 amp plug on the driveway. Started the refrig on gas. Turned off the converter as my battery was strong enough to run the 12 volts to the frig and thermostat. Made sure water heater was off. Now I have most the load off the buss. Started the 15K ducted a/c in the back of trailer. Set the thermostat to 60 to keep the compressor from cycling. Let run for about ten minutes then turned on the non ducted 15K in the bedroom. Two hours later the unit was down to 72 and comfortable to load for our trip. As others have said on this forum power management is the key. (Would love to take credit for this fix but I actually got the idea from Mudchief who was stuck in a state park with only 30 amp service) I think this might have worked for Fire5er but as most info too late for his situation. Jim
