easy overnight stops

We are going to Fla. in June. I will probably be getting on I95 south of Richmond by way of I64. If somebody has a better route from I81 to I95 please let me know. Anyway for those of you that have suggestion for good overnight stops (campgrounds), wife doesn't want parking lots. I will at this point be stopping 4 times about every 300 miles. Can you tell I have all the time in the world, If I was in a hurry I would leave the 38' thing home with the two dogs.and maybe the DW Ourr destination is Topsail SP.

thanks a lot swanny

I usually take I-81 to I-66 to 17 and follow 17 to I-95 at Fredericksburg, VA. I-66 is somewhat hilly. 17 is 4 lanes with traffic lights but a nice ride. Getting on I-95 from 17 at rush hour is sometimes a challenge (anytime from 2pm until around 6pm). We try to travel it on a weekday or early in the morning.

I see a lot of campers & motorhomes on this route when traveling without the Monty.

Another route is I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95. All interstate but hilly in southern VA especially heading down I-77 to Charlotte but what a beautiful view!! Charlotte can be a little hectic at rush hour.

I wish there was an easier way to get from I-81 to I-95 and avoid the Richmond traffic.

I vote for I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95, anything to stay away from DC and Richmond area, been there, done that and have thrown the tee shirt away. As for campgrounds, we stop about every 250 to 300 also, there are a lot of facilities along the route, do a campground search using Streets and Trips, helps a lot on building an itinerary that suits your travel style.

Kevin,
If you are leaving from Bangor, you are approximately 250 miles from Front Royal. There is a Passport America CG called North Fork RV Resort (301 North Fork Rd Front Royal, VA) We stayed with our Monty a few years ago and were backed right up to the water's edge. It was a great site. The North Fork river is about 100 yards wide, and wading deep. Inner tubes are great.
PA Rates are only good Sunday through Thursday. The kids will love it (Big Kids also)

North Fork will be about 230 miles from I-77. There are approximately 10 CG's within a 10 mile radius of I-81/I-77.

It is about 200 miles to the Northern outskirts of Columbia. The Southern side picks up I-26. About 20 miles further to the Southern part where you pick up I-26. Sesquicentennial State Park has 'some' hook ups. There may be other CG's around there but I'm not familiar with them. You could just go another 60 miles and be on I-95. I don't know what's down that way. Sorry.

Happy trails!

I use 81 to 26 to 95. Having said that, if you heading to Topsail SP, which is a great place, I would use I75 rather than going East then back West. Unless there is a reason you desire that route.
Enjoy Topsail, we love the place.

We also exit on to 301 and stay at the KOA in Stark welcome relief from the interstate

Also we stay at the KOA at I think it is the 33 Mile marker in South Carolina
called Point South 33 miles north of the Ga. border Nice pull thru's,Clean Rest Rooms, easy in and out, shady, full hookup,Dog Friedly and no need to disconnect.

I-81 to I-66 to Rte 17 to I-95. All good hiways.

Since you are not in a hurry 301 in Florida can work. It's just a bit out of the way. Just watch your speed. 301 is noted for radar/laser traps. A few miles over the limit may get you a ticket.

BUT seeing as you want to go to Topsail, which is in the panhandle from I-95 I would take I-295 around J'Ville to I-10 and I-10 to the panhandle.

Thanks Glenn I did that route once along time ago. I couldn't remember what route 17 was like. I did remember a guy told me NOT to get messed up at 17 & 66 or i would be in the mountains in WV.
