U.S. Hwy 20 from Idaho border to Salem?

Has anyone been on U.S. Hwy 20 going through Burns and Bend, Oregon? Looks to be an easy route, but wondering if there are difficult mountain passes. Leaving in 6 days, so would appreciate any input.

We drive that route every year pulling our 06, 3000RK, Spring and Fall. we have driven from Ontario but we usually stop at Good Sams park just East of Burns, has full hook ups and easy access. We live in Lebanon , but have changed our drive over the pass and coming from Burns take the 22 juction to Salem as it is mostly downhill lots of scenery and easy drive. You can drive fromOntario to Salem ina day,but it it a long drive. Lots of sights on way and things to do. Jusst hollar

We came across 20 from Ontario to 395 and then south last year in June and spent the night in Burns. Very nice road and would drive it again if in the area.

Thanks Rich and Kathy for the info. We just made our reservations for Burns and Bend and look forward to a new route. We usually go through Portland and Boardman and are wanting some new scenery.

Bob, We're looking at the map again. Where do you pick up Junction 22? After Santiam Pass?

Yes it is the Santiam Pass Juction, Hwy 20 is more windy,steep and the vehicles can pile up behind you even though you are doing the speed limit. The road actually splits North to Salem and South to Eugene and 20 takes to Swet Home, Lebanon

A couple of quick things to look at, when you get on 22 by the bridge and fish hatchery watch to the right look up and you will get a spectular view of Mt Jeffeerson with all the snow. Detroit Resivour has lots of campground good scenery and as you get to Salem there should be fruit stands open, enjoy

Footloose - We take 20 out of Bend and after Santiam Pass go through Detroit to Salem. A good road and great scenery like blarkman says.

Thanks Sunshine and blarkman. We're off this morning. We'll spend a few days in Bend and also Burns, then take the Junction 22 cutoff to Salem. We appreciate the help.

We took US Hwy 20 from the Idaho border to Burns, Bend and then at Junction 22 turned to Salem. We loved the entire trip. The scenery was very beautiful and tranquil. In Burns we enjoyed the Harney County Historical Museum. In Bend we enjoyed the Mill District and the walk along the river, the Deschutes Brewery tour, Lava Lands, and Paulina and East Lakes. We wondered how bad the haul up to Santiam Pass would be, but were pleasantly surprised. In Bend we started at 3625 feet and rose quickly to 4815 at the summit of Santiam Pass, so it wasn't a problem at all. However, on the other side we dropped to about 500 feet. It was very nice going west, but the haul going east was very long and looked to be a doozer. We had perfect weather. The wild flowers were abundantly in bloom and the rivers, lakes and creeks were high. Thanks very much both to blarkman and Sunshine for your suggestions and advice.

If you have the time and stop at Sisters the Mckenzie pass hwy is worth seeing, no trailers but the view is fantastic, a few million years ago the top blew off and ran down the side and up the other side of the valley. Back in the 30's they cut a road throughg all the lava and built a view house. Road is usally closed mid Oct-june due to snow
