Check bed height difference too

I never used airbags, or felt the need to. Not sure what they might do to normal no towing bed height and loaded towing bed height. But any more height on my rig and the trailer would be riding too high in front and possibly cause too little space from top of truck tailgate and side rails to bottom of RV overhang.

I’ve been towing my 16 3820fk with my F350 drw. I noticed a bit of squat (1.5 inches) when hooked up. I put a set of Timbrens in and it took away the squat. It rides a bit rough when not towing.

That extra 1.5 inches might have been too much on my prior duallys ('05 F350 and '11 Chevy 3500. My current '17 Chevy 3500 SRW allows a bit more bed drop I think, and I have just about 6" clearance from top rails to RV frontend, and it rides almost exactly level, and is definitely smoother riding than the duallies when empty, and still very smooth with RV hooked. It might have just a tiny bit more side to side sway on occasions but still very safe and easy to handle.

We have the long bed on our F350 DRW and tow a Montana 3721rl. Maybe drops a couple of inches. No issue with the ride or tow. This rig has been up and down all the mountains in the west and there have only been a single issue with overheating the front brakes. Since changing the trailer brakes to discs there have been no braking issues. We simply love the F350. Towing down the Interstate and tractor trailers dont shake it, side winds blowing heavy don't move it and the ride is smooth.

My 2017 Ram dually came with the airbags. Love the way it rides

I have a 2018 Montana 3791 RD along with a 2018 Ford F-350 4x4 and never had a need for air bags...

I added the Timbren shocks before my last trip. We did 2000 miles and the ride was significantly better. I have a 2015 F350 diesel dually Platinum and was very pleased. Timbren’s require no maintenance once installed. It took me less then an hour to change out the stock with the new Timbren’s.

I have a Ford F450 and it squats about an inch to two inches depending on how we are loaded (water in the fresh water tank mainly). I was constantly getting blinked at by on-coming traffic this past December because that little bit of squat makes that much of a difference in headlight aim. I hope to get air bags installed this Spring before starting out again; I believe the oncoming drivers will appreciate it and I'd imagine the driver ahead of me will appreciate it as well since I won't be in his rear view mirror so much.

I installed air bags and what a difference in ride unloaded. They work in tandem with the shocks to dampen the bumps. I use 20 pounds unloaded. They don't lift the truck with that much air. As for the distance between trailer and bed rails air bags can't change that. I have the Firestone bags with the compressor on the truck.

Dhardy, by now you have had a chance to pull your 3820fK with the new truck. What was the outcome of towing without the airbags? I’m in the exact same boat 3820FK and just purchased a 2019 F350 DRW. Wondering if I will need the airbags.

I have pulled my trailer approx. 1000 miles now. I’m not going to add airbags, it does not appear to need them. I love the truck. It is unbelievable how much better it is compared to my 2017 f350 SRW. Hope this helps.

Dhardy,
An update ...after a couple trips, we are going to put the bags on. The Chevrolet pulls and handles the 3820 just great , but like to even out the ride and add capacity...there gonna be put on .

Purchased my 18 Laramie longhorn with max tow package that included airbags. They lower the truck 1.5 inches for near level tow on my 2019 3700lk, .2 degrees off level. Very happy with airbags and the ride is smoother when lowered.

Ps. Came with a mopar/curt 30k hitch, set at the lowest setting, 6.5 inch clearance over the bed.

I’m enjoying the new truck and just pulled the Montana over 2,000 miles. Definitely don’t need airbags or any suspension enhancements.

We did not need airbags on our F -350 to increase any capacity but we did install them to level out the rig. It does make a difference when the rig is towing level.

There are still some out there that believe the air-bags increase capacity. The only reason for air-bags is for leveling yet some claim there rig rides better with air-bags which if does is a bonus. The air-bags do help keep the back of the truck from springing up and down when on some of our rub-board interstates. I prefer air-bags but they are not a must have for the late model trucks of today.
